Durham Mining Museum have kindly agreed to put on a display within Marley Hill Engine Shed. We've managed to find the key holder for the 3road shed, and he claims it will be open from 11.30 till approx 2.30/3pm.

Approx 100 vehicles confirmed for the historic vehicle display!

Locos should be unloaded at lunch time today, we'll keep you updated ...

    Did anybody go?

Surprised to see no comments, picture links etc!?

I was there on Friday evening for a short time and all day yesterday.

BRILLIANT is the only word for it.

    Well done all.

Great to be able to spend the day lineside and onboard the trains with ease.

Alfred and Judy were just a riot and had me smiling everytime I saw them, they will certainly be a tough act to follow for 2010.

Rumour has it that you "broke even" on Saturday, I hope this is true and that the good profits were made for the railway.

Trains were all full that I travelled on, and I hope the bogie coach sees further use on the line, as I couldn't find a seat to have a ride on board it.

A great gala, the best yet.

Hope Twizell is finished soon and might we see 32 next year?

Wonder if "J72" 69023 Joem would be able to operate on the line as it is due back towards the end of the year I understand, possibly with a class 14 diesel (runs for cover), the Ashington link would make it a legend of industry perhaps!?

    Best Regards

I was also there for a short while on Friday evening for the evening shoot, and all day Saturday. An excellent gala, well done all! Two superb visiting locos, lots of movements, and a decent timetable that was pretty robust and rarely fell more than 10 minutes behind schedule. One slight worry was the buffet at Andrews House selling out of sandwiches before lunchtime on Saturday!

I'll post my photos later this evening. I was impressed with the evening photo shoot in particular. Sometimes night shoots are excessively lit, but by using just 4 lights, 2 at each of the sites, and the shed lighting, it looked a lot better. I finished working nights at 6am Friday morning, went to MHR gala for a few hours, then up to Tanfield in the afternoon! I was only there for an hour (I didn't want to get there too early when the sky was still light), but still came away with several decent shots.

As 47406 says below, a tough act to follow for next year!

Thanks for the positive coments everyone. Apologies that the infamous Tanfield Massive have been a bit quiet of late, myself, Watchdog and Mk1hater are the gala organisers so we've all been flat out and then recovering. The latter of which I think I've just about managed!

Alfred and Judy really proved themselves - anyone who was around on the Friday afternoon for the test run would certaily have seen them do that!

Has anyone got any suggestions for improvements which they'd like to see whilst they are fresh in their minds? We're due to have our post event de-brief / discussion very soon so it would be god to hear what others think we can do better.

Thanks top everyone who came along and gave the event such a good atmosphere and of course to the dozens and dozens of volunteers (I'd estimate around 100 over the weekend which is not a bad number at all for what most people consider to be a small railway) who made it all possible some of whom literally could not have given any more.

On that latter point it should be noted that all of the engines on the friday night were cleaned and prepared by the next generation of footplate crew - trainees of 17 and under of which there were around ten on the night. To see them all doing such a good job was very encouraging.

I suspect that the wheelbase would prohibit it at the moment, don't think a Paxman would get round the corner to the shed off the mainline. Once we've got somewhere we can keep an engine other than at Marley Hill though it might be an option.

Can anyone confirm whether Cecil A Cochrane has been subject to some front end modifications? When you listen to it working it sounds a little different to what one would normally expect.

The only mod it has is that the new boiler fitted in 1998 operates at 180 psi as opposed to the normal 160psi. the different sound it makes is probably down to the valve timing being out.
