New builds of extinct diesels

    Reading about the firing up of the engine from a 'Baby Deltic' and the possibillty of using bits from other English Electric diesels could recreate one, is it possible that that some diesels which are extinct could be reserected in the same light as some steam types? (eg. A1, Grange, Brighton Alantic...).

    One example of a diesel which is missed (although not for its unreliability) is the North British class 22 diesel hydraulic. How could such a new engine or replica be built? My guess would be to track down the correct MAN engine and transmissions from, I guess, Germany and build a new cassis and stretched skin panels around it. Is this possible? Spear engines have been found for the other preserved diesel-hydraulics

    One advantage over steam new rebuilds is if the right engines, etc. can be found, it could be cheaper then to build a diesel rather then a steam engine. However on the other hand, fund raising for such a venture could be difficult because it would as interesting outside of diesel enthusiasts. However it would plug a gap in Western Region post-steam era, as most diesels associated with the West County are the North British’s replacements.

    Scrap a couple of 47's, track down some maybach engines and build a falcon, great fun on the mainline!

    Surely someone else must be thinking about 10000? - repanel a 37 (and detune if desired) and build new bogies - then paint in black and you have Ivatt's 2 fingers to Nationalisation!!!

    I think "extinct" is the ideal state for diesels to be in.

    Same windows as a D63XX - offer stands! (Incidentally there was supposed to be an engine from a D61XX in use as a standby generator at a Manchester Hospital some years ago, wonder if its still there?)
    The Ivatt locos were fitted with the 16SVT engine. The bogies for 10000/1 were similar to those of the EM2 electrics of which there was a spare set around at one time - Anyone from the EM2 Society confirm this?

    Which sort? I think they (or some of them) were re-engined from MAN to Paxman.

    Actually that's the first thing I thought of. It's a real shame that one of the twins didn't survive long enough to make it into the preservation - they underpin so much of recent rail history it's unreal.

    By comparison a Baby Deltic (although a very intriguing prospect in its own right) would be a bit of a novelty sideshow.

    Mind you I also like the idea of a class 21/29, so what do I know? ;)

    Actually if a serious group were to build a class 21/29 replica I think this would be a very good thing indeed. If an engine (and some quarterlight windows!) are around then there is the making of something perhaps?

    But how were the originals constructed - separate chassis or monocoque bodies? That would make a difference as to how easy it was to build one, I'd have thought. Also, am I right in thinking that they had spoked wheels? Were these common to anything else?

    North British may have been the most spectacular failure of the diesel era but they were also one of Britain's most successful locomotive builders in their day, we have surviving examples of a NB electric main line loco (E3036/84001) and plenty of shunters, but to not have a main line diesel is a crying shame. More so when you realise that D6319 was meant to be preserved but got cut up by mistake, even more so when D601 and D6122 lingered at Barry for so long while everyone was too busy buying derelict Bulleids and the like (no disrespect to those engines intended, of course, but some of them are still derelict now and as a preservation movement the two diesels were surely more historically important!)

    but who on earth would want to pay for a newbuild extinct diesel??????????

    Well I just thought I give my idea out. I think a person who really really wants to see one again would want to pay for it!

    But I wondered if there would be enough surport as I stated before, would people take to it as they do to steam new builds?

    Is it possible for a 21/21/29 to be recreated?

    Any other diesels which are missed? The Falcon has been mentioned...

    the Bulleid locos shouldnt be too difficult as they are similar to Clas 40's in many respects especially 10203...the Twins 10000/1 would seem to have the best case historically but maybe the efforts being proposed would be better directed to rebuilding the Gas Turbine...15000 or 15100 cant remember which, I think Pete Waterman owns it doesnt he?

    I cannot really imagine the owners of the surviving Class 40s happily forming an orderly queue to have their locos modified!
    The Gas Turbine loco (at Crewe) is 18000.

    I think Barry is the best place for steam!

    A D600 would be nice, but twin engined is twice as much work regards engines.

    I think the only way a project like this would happen would be for a original complete power unit to be obtained, ie why a baby deltic is most likely at the moment.

    If a D6300 engine was sourced, that would be nice,as this would prob be most realistic NBL project, and fill a major diesel hydraulic gap. Such a shame D6319 got scrapped... then D601 at barry...

    hey, the whole idea of replica diesels is cloud-cuckoo land, so modifying a class 40 is just as likely.... :)

    I wouldnt really support modifying one loco to represent another.....I think I shall always look at ( for instance) the GWS Saint as Maindy Hall.....I dont want to do this, but I fear I shall anyway....

    You are quite right; as someone said earlier "but who on earth would want to pay for a newbuild extinct diesel?????????? " - no one it would seem ...... so far!
