    Is that a derailment?
What is that thing appearing to sit between the rails of the points?

    How is the loco now?

The thing that looks like its sitting in the 4 foot is a check rail, and is there to guide the wheels over a point nose, to make sure it doesnt take the wrong route and derail, and is supposed to be there. If you look the derailment happened before the wheels came to that point, so that would probably not have been the problem.

More likely would be the wheels splitting the points.
i.e. a slight bit of a gap between the point blades is found by the wheel flange and results in one set of wheels taking a different path to the other.

Are these points operated from the box, groundframe or by point lever alongside?
With the first 2 there is a possibility of the use of a facing point lock but not as likely with the local point lever.

Taken from the WNXX forum topic about the derailment, posted by user LNERGE:

"After a few seconds searching the net it is possible to find a few pictures that show the working arrangements at this ground frame. From the brief look i have had it looks like it is released from the box as one would expect. However there is has a facing point lock operated from the box when laying normal. This lever, i expect, is track locked by the two track circuits at the site. When this lever is reversed it withdraws the bolt from the lock stretcher and reverses the trap in the loco yard exit. The points themselves are then operated locally via the ground frame. My guess is the ground frame point lever is not locked by the track circuits occupied and is free to be moved at any time. This is quite normal for a ground frame lever as movements over points controlled by it are usually protected by a rather clever device called the MK1 eyeball. I feel the arrangements at this location are a little unorthodox but protect facing passenger moves adequately.

All the above information is freely available via the net."

Any update on what the damage to the loco is?
    Are the rails now repaired?
