Cheers. 4752 x 3168 pixels. Was using my EOS50D at 105mm [168mm equivalent]. Yes I did see you on yonder hill but I cloned you out as your walking boots were too shiny and were glinting in the sun. :)

Thank you for that Mark, I would like to hope that some of the other members would follow suit and hit the edit button...

Please PM me if you think that my request is unreasonable but it may be around 11ish tonight when I reply as I am on a quick break in work and will not be online until I finish my shift.

    Thanks, Neil.

That 'buffoon' would be me. There wasn't a headboard for "The Tin Bath" or "The wrinkled stocking" or anything, so i (and the rest of the support crew) thought people might appreciate a headboard, regardless of what it says, and seems many did, so tough luck.

As for promoting public interest in steam specials, most of the public (and a lot of enthusiasts) wouldn't know what the Jacobite is and then would'nt be bothered what it said, a named train is to public more important than a 'normal' one and therfore they remember it better, and probably more likely to go on one in the future.

As for insulting me, i don't really think that was required or called for, perhaps if you had given up your free time to help these engines look presentable (the 1/4'd buffers were my doing too) you would have ground on which to make such comments, however as you didn't. Leave the pathetic childish remarks in your little mind were they belong.

To be honest,as i keep saying its the loco not the headboard that counts, and it actually makes for a 'Different' photo if you ask me!

We really are a quite unpleasant lot aren't we , whether it be bemoaning headboards , complaining about some aspect of history or telling each other to shut up ( I know I did it ) or generally grumbling about our own railways before finding a line worse than hours to moan about and make ourselves feel better !!

Unbroken rule , if you own the loco or have spent hours restoring the engine / maintaining it then the livery it carries and the front adornments is your choice and yours alone . That we have two BR liveried Black 5's on a rake of Maroon Mk1's 41 years after the end of steam as the advert says ...... priceless

It was on the front just after Barnsley so probably fell off as it was on a bit of a slant. At least it promoted the Jacobites for next year whilst it was on, so you have to look at the positives from it, even though it was different. At the end of the day i travelled up north to see the engines, not the headboards and wasnt to be dissapointed. Pictures hopefully to be uploaded tomorrow.

It came off at a water stop, didn't fall off, and didn't end up in a River.

In 30 or 40 years time, someone will publish a photo of Sunday's train in some on-line forum (or whatever has replaced them by then) and ask where and when it was taken. "The headboard says The Jacobite, but my grandad thinks it looks like Chinley. What's the story?" This will prompt those of us still around to recall the occasion and try to transfer our old HDV or JPEG pictures to the prevailing standard. Sadly, someone's bound to remember the grumbling and begrudging of the "inappropriate" headboard, but hopefully, someone will also remember the tale about it going to Hathersage for winter storage.

Nostalgia and a sense of recreating history today is only part of what our hobby is about. We are also creating new history. Do you remember ETHELs? Do you remember blue-&-grey coaches? The SLOA Pullmans? Days Out Railtours? The day Midland 1000 and Leander went over Ribblehead in the snow? Good, bad, enlightened, misguided, triumph over adversity or sorry shambles... it's our history, our tradition.

In this context, I think crossing the Pennines carrying The Jacobite headboard, and especially the story behind it, is an interesting footnote for our living history. So, if I may say so, stop grumbling and enjoy it. ;-)

For petes sake, lets just enjoy steam on the main line and be gratefull its still with us through the hard work and money spent on locos and rolling stock.
If you dont like something about your photos hit the delete button or photoshop them.
Lets all get on with it.
    Regards,
John aged 49 and a bit!

For those who were so outraged at the Jacobite headboard, I wonder what they would have made of the Daily Mirror "Andy Capp" special of many years ago. A Midland Compound painted red and yellow and a headboard as big as the smokebox door. Perhaps the next Cotton Mills could do something similar. :)
