I'm a keen bike rider and just after I bought my new bike I got a cold call from Sustrans asking for a donation.

I gave the guy a hard time, explaiong how their charity had screwed a number of preservation schemes such as Radstock and the Wenford branch.

He didn't listen and still assumed I'd donate! What a terrible bunch - and reading about this project and their involvement makes me fume.

Good luck, and well donme for promoting the CTC.

Sustrans - a charity? More a property company in sheep's clothing!

Does that scrap at Appleby East have planning consent, and the relevant environmental licences??? GDO rights to open storage do not extend to scrap processing.

What do the Charity Commission think of this "charity"'s stewardship of its charitable aims at Appleby? or its performance of its undertakings given at the time of transfer?

What do the HLF think of how its funds are being used - perhaps they should see the piles of scrap in the rural high Pennine landscape.

Perhaps some of the Trustees and directors should tell us how they see their current performance in relation to the above, and their responsibility for stewardship of publicly owned assets.

    Shouldn't they?

The same question could be asked of Warcop itself.

Since the page is so full of disjointed quotes, apparently unlinked pages and pictures and so forth, could someone please explain to me in a paragraph exactly what the problem is between Sustrans and the Eden Valley?

Simple - Sustrans are a bunch of selfish myopic scumbags.

I know of a property that is affected by a S106 agreement requiring the owner - if so requested - to dedicate a strip of land as a public footpath

Sustrans had aspirations for it - in fact the S106 was supposed to be for a scheme of theirs - but the Planning Authority got it wrong and wrote footpath instead of cycleway

They eventually appeared and asked for their cycleway, so the owner said "fine, you aren't entitled to it, but here it is free, gratis and for nought, provided the route is available for walkers, cyclists and horseriders"

Sustrans rejected the gift outright because if it wasn't exclusive to cyclists, they didn't want it.

Sustrans don't want anyone sharing anything they have their despicable, sticky, hands on, despite their weasel words about conceding railway use on old formations as set out in various documents.

The Eden Valley is just another example

Right - anyone else care to reply without reference to vitriol and referring to the Eden Valley Railway?

Wassup - you don't like the wider truth?

The problem between the Warcop boys and Sustrans is that it takes two willing parties to negotiate a way forward. There aren't two willing parties there

Sustrans don't like sharing, or doing anything they see as giving rights away - you don't like that - nor do I, but its the simple unvarnished unvitriolic truth -honest!

As they say on other railway forums - "get used to it"

No - I didn't ask for the wider truth; I asked for a paragraph of so on exactly what is going on at Appleby East.

I still haven't got that so far.

As far as I can distil from the website - I'm not involved with the EVR in any way, shape or form - 10+ years ago, BRB residual agreed to lease Appleby East to the EVR, then 10 years ago BRB(R) sold Appleby East, and a fair chunk of the line towards Warcop, to Sustrans, with a requirement that some sort of lease was organised between Sustrans and the EVR to allow reopening. This hasn't happened, Appleby East has descended into being a scrapyard, no cycle path has happened and the EVR are annoyed.

I think thats about the gist of it.

appleby east has been a scrapyard for years, originally leased from brb to the scrapyward owner, now rented from sustrans, nice steady income for them.
