On my recent visit to Dinas, I took a couple of pictures of a de Winton that I had not seen there before. ( http://redirectingat.com/?id=593X1004&url=http://ronfisher.fotopic.net/p61894495.html and http://ronfisher.fotopic.net/p61894496.html ). Tony Parnell and Pedr Jarvis have both told me that it is LLANFAIR of 1895 from the Penmaenmawr Granite Quarry.

However, this has raised a doubt over the identity of a de Winton that I saw at Penmaenmawr in 1963 ( http://ronfisher.fotopic.net/p40968532.html and http://ronfisher.fotopic.net/p40968527.html ). I was under the impression that this was WATKIN of 1893. Was it, does anybody know? Or was it the LLANFAIR that now resides at Dinas?

    Ron,

I have taken advice from a DeWinton expert!

The DeWinton you photographed at Penmaenmawr in 1963 is WATKIN.
WATKIN is now preserved at Penrhyn Castle.

William - you beat me to it - just back from perusing my books, "Llanfair" was derelict in a part of the quarry at that time and comparing Ron's pictures of "Watkin" out of use with the same angle taken of the engine at Penrhyn, the details (even dents in the cladding) are identical. So yes, another confirms it's Watkin.

Father rescued a 1917 Thorneycroft J type lorry from the top of the quarry at Penmaenmawr in the 1980's. It came down the mountain with the aid of a Catepilar D6

There was the mortal remains of a DeWinton still nearby. The frames as I recall

Which was it?, and what happened to it?
