Maybe I am getting ahead of myself, but I thought I read somewhere the cylinder for 35010 was coming from 35022 ? It's owner also needed a wheel for 34046 (i'm not sure where it's come from currently, but I assume 35022 would provide this as well ?) 35022 with old boiler, broke cylinder and bad wheels would be a good no hope candidate that could fill a "barry wreck" story role well..and in many senses of the word represent a true story of actual the condition many engines entered preservation.

I'm sure there are plenty other suitable engines.. but the public like named express passenger engines more than tank and freight engines and so such a locomotive would attract more attention and draw them into the story.

I was thinking 92219 at the Midland, the second last steam loco built for BR. She would be the perfect juxtaposition for 92220 (whenever she returns) However, reading this month's Steam Railway, she has a relatively good boiler and good wheels so is a more realistic restoration project than one of the Barry ten.

  3. I think it's a great idea, but wouldn't one major down-side for the NRM be that - inevitably - there would then be a bunch of keyboard warriors expressing explosive indignation that it should be restored?

I can see it now "It's a DISGRACE that a national museum dedicated to PRESERVING the history of RAILWAYS should not RESTORE this locomotive..." you know, yadda yadda yadda, zzzzz....

As I say, I think it's a really good idea, but I could see a bunch of the usual armchair keyboard bashers using it as something else to grizzle about.

Maybe do half unrestored half resotored finish to show people what it looked like and what it looks like now and have authentic bits missing

Is there any better reason for choosing a restoration subject??!!
The wheelset for 34046 came from 35025.

Sorry, but that's not correct - the replacement wheelset for 34046 came from 35011 GSN.
