Very tasty, two Flat tops and a "de tuned" one all in one day.

I agree about very tasty, and if the weather relents I might just go ... but why 'de-tuned'?

Talk about short notice. Could have been potential for an out of season mini-gala, however, I'm sure that circumstances dictated the short notice aspect side of things.
It's just so frustrating that I shall be working and it's too late to do anything about it.

The originals (un-rebuilts) are free-running but the rebuilts need pushing a little so they are often referred to by Bulleid fans as 'de-tuned' . However, for a rebuilt, Eddystone (thanks to the Swanage fitters) is now definitely 'tuned' !

Don't know about Saturday but it should be either '28 or '70.

"De-tuned" is a term used by some devotees of Mr. Bulleid's chain driven wonders to describe the Jarvis rebuilds. On the other hand Ian Wright of Sheffield Park fame prefers to use the term "wrecked" rather than de-tuned.

I thought it might be something like that, but I get the impression that there wasn't much, or any, difference in performance between the two. Fuel consumption was much the same - excepting oil, but maintenance was cheaper.

On that basis I would doubt if the conversion was worth the taxpayers expense! I do prefer the appearance of the re-builds though.

At risk of adding fuel to this long-burning fire, the evidence is that rebuilts were significantly more economical in use. To quote the 1958 trials* between 34026 and 34078 on the Ramsgate route, the rebuilt 34026 averaged 41.42 lb/mile of coal and achieved 3.38 lb/dhp/hr. The unrebuilt 34078's figures were 50.64 and 3.51. And '78 managed to catch fire on one of the test runs and failed with a stuck whistle on another. Whether the investment was justified probably depends on how many years of further service each rebuilt enjoyed.

*see Roger Mannion's "the Southern Pacifics" page 172.

I'm sure that it is always possible to quote individual performances to the advantage of one or the other. If you add fleet totals together they seem to come out pretty well the same.

    Awesome!

Can anyone confirm what way Tangmere will be facing? I guessing it comes back on the Saturdays tour facing into Swanage, I wonder if they'll have time to turn it?

The possibility of Unrebuilts passing (facing each other) at Corfe is quite a pleasant thought...

Making an educated gues, 34067 will not be turned as it takes a long time to get
to eastleigh and it would have to be split to fit onto the turntable, and then undergo
mainline FTR's in a matter of hours, neither of which are feasible.

Though if you are going Matt, make sure you get a shot of 34067 heading south with corfe castle in the background, from the footpath south of the station, excellent photo opportunity!

That's the plan! Is very rare to get a Bulleid facing south at Swanage, hence we had Manston turned to face south when we chartered it earlier in the year.

Fingers crossed we get some OK weather, 3 Bulleids in action at Swanage is pretty much as good as it gets IMO!

    Wanna Bet?

Seriously, we turned Manston last week when the 3 WC plan was first suggested. So that 67 & 70 can double head a couple of trains to Swanage facing the same way.
Sorry if they will not be passing each other facing opposite directions. But I doubt this will be the only opportunity. Do you?

So are two Bulleids going to be facing south? If so that's even better!

Two spam cans running facing Swanage (reading through the thread). The rebuilt will be facing Wareham per usual operating.

I will have to pop down to the Swanage Railway on Sunday then, it just so happens that I am in the area visiting my parents who just happen to live just off the main Wareham Swanage Road in Stoborough
