It is indeed very impressive, economically though it's an awful lot of locos competing to build up funds for the next big overhaul.

very true, but just remember 4965,9600 and 5043 belong to the same organisation, they are all well looked after and kept in top condition and alot of free time goes in to them from a hard working group of engineers, look how quick 4965 was turned around, so their for it makes it easier and cheaper when the boiler tickets run out, they also are all self contained with revenue from in house tour operator vintage trains, no middle man to take the profit.

Although our friend billy-balls seems to be unusually abrasive on this issue, I know where he is coming from.

It seems to be a terrible shame to have a mainline-ready engine sitting in the yard for 2 years getting steamed only for open days.

Although Pitchford is just one of three Halls living at TYS, could it not venture it's pretty little wheels out onto the mainline a bit more often that once every two years?

It was nice to see the 3 Halls together at the TYS open-day last month.

Unfortunately it's not up to the owner or support crew of a loco how often they steam thier engine. They have to be approached by a railtour operator or preserved line.

There doesn't seem to be much demand for GW locos outside of Tyseley :(

And that's the main reason I've only been on one railtour this year!

I agree the NRM has steam, diesel and electric but I dont believe any of their electric locos or units are currently registered to work on Network Rail infrastructure.

The poster put "since the 60s". The Class 71 was active in the 90s and the 502 unit in the 80s. Yes, nothing electric is currently registered, but it has been, and might again... ;-)

It would be nice to see the 502 out on the main line again - happy memories :)

Yes I am an active volunteer
Or you are into the position of organising your own railtours witha ll the attendant risks that that involves

    Now how about 5029 on a Tys - Soa - Kidderminster - Bridgnoth - TYS trip ?
