Hmm! I do not think they are fitted to our Barclays at all?!? Belvoir,1931 and Tommy do not have these 'gluts' fitted, the cotter pins seem to just b ut up to the brasses! Will look in to it!

That would be very unusual if they didn't, the idea of the glut is two fold, one to give an accurate fit to the cotter width and incline, and two to prevent the cotter cutting into the softer brass. Will scan in the drawings for 1563's rods and brasses tomorrow if I get chance and post a copy. Am also trying to find out if Statfold have the Barclay archives, hope to know more after the weekend.

    Hello,

I've just had a look at my Andrew Barclay parts diagram. This shows the standard 4-wheeler in exploded form, with all the parts numbered. It doesn't show a glut plate, and I don't have these for either Harry, or Tom Parry (P&BR).

On reflection, I think I will probably run some up on a miller. I would have thought it quite straightforward, as long as you have the cotter to determine the taper angle (1 in 10?).

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Ian.

News on the Spa Valley Industrials

Following on from the successful steam tests in late August, RSH No. 7673 'Ugly' had its boiler returned to the frames on Thursday 19th November for the final time. Most of the lagging and cladding had already been fitted to the boiler prior to the lift. The brand new ashpan was fitted too.

Work will continue over the winter on reassembling the engine with a view to returning her to service early next year.

Meanwhile, TKh 'Spartan' continues to progress towards a return to traffic. The jobs on the list are all the small items that now require completion but the new steam pipes for the injectors are complete and await final fitting.

More details can be found on our website - www.spavalleyrailway.co.uk

Jacks Green is currently stored in the siding next to the car park (along with most of the other out of ticket locos). I believe there are no current plans for her restoration.

I believe Rhos is dismantled towards the back of the shed, though don't know what the current situation on her is.

I heard that a few years ago the NNR wanted to buy/restore Jacks Green to run alongside Ring Haw but the NVR refused.

Just to clarify, Jacks Green is alongside the turntable/entrance building in reasonable cosmetic order, with public footplate access. The other stored engines are located as described.

I was also curious about Rhos - is it being worked on by the Mayflower Group?? Also does anyone know about condition and plans for 'Derek Crouch' and the Austerity 0-6-0ST at NVR?

Doh! Had a (premature) senior moment there. You're right, it's Derek Crouch that's down that siding looking sorry for itself rather than Jacks Green.

Don't know of any future plans for any of the locos though. I believe work is currently focusing on Tinkerbell (The Danish tank in the works) and keeping the running fleet running.

Hi Everyone just to let you know...1) I have started again with a slightly different user name due to an IT melt down!
    2) Tommy Royden now has coupling rods fitted and new gaskets for the cylinders ready!
    Good bit of progress then!:p

I'm sure I've seen a suggestion (Ruddington website) that Manning Wardle Dolobran may be being overhauled and a return to traffic expected in 2010

Now that would look lovely at Cottesmore

The whole class are known as 'Uglies'. Bit unfair, in my view. Am I right in thinking these are more powerful than the more common Austerity/J94 type?

    RSH Uglies

Down on paper, the Ugly class supposedly have more tractive effort than the Austerities!

The Uglies have the raised firebox that was the hallmark of Manning Wardle and thus, the shortened saddletank. Although built by RSH, they embody many features of MW locos. They were supplied to Stuarts & Lloyds who had many Manning Wardle and Kitson locos in their fleet. The lineage is down to the fact that RSH owned the rights of Kitsons who, in turn, owned the rights of Manning Wardle. In fact, S & L had 16" locos of the same design supplied by MW, Kitson and R.S.H., several of which still exist:
    MW 2009 & 2010
    K 5469, 5470 & 5474
    RSH 7031

Dolobran is under restoration at Ruddington, a very heavy and thorough restoration by a small but dedicated team of volounteers. As part of the process new 'shallow' buffer beams have been fitted, as they were when the loco was delivered to Lloyds minerals in 1910, new fully riveted cab, new tank, new footplating. The frames have been staightend and these are just a few of the jobs so far undertaken, also the cylinder block has been re-bored and lifted, the LH cylinder centre line was 3/4" lower than the RH side ! The miss-alinment probably happend when a new cylinder block was fitted at S & L. All the work done so far has been carried out at Ruddington, other than re-profiling of the tyres.
It is hoped that towards the end of 2010 Dolobran will steam again !:)
