Does anyone know what locos will be out on the GCR on Saturday? Are there 2 or 3 sets of coaches?

Call me a little controversial but its Santa Specials, it is not supposed to be for the gricers, it is for the kiddies... So if there is tinsel it makes it more special for them.

Good - all in favour of a bit of Xmas cheer!
There was a lot of argument abut tinsel on another thread (SVR Santas) and even people withdrawing from donations (or something like that) because of a bit of tinsel....

I'm not too bothered about tinsel/headboards but as i'm in the area I'd thought I'd get a few snaps. Looking at previous photos one set appears to be top and tailed with a diesel, is that still the case (not an issue either ;-) )

Yes - one top & tailed, the other steam both ways. The top & tailed set ran with the diesel at the south end last weekend and (north-facing) 45231 at the north end. You have to hope a north-facing engine ends up on the top & tailed set as I think the steam engine will always be at the north end, since that's the water tower end at Loughborough. So a choice of 45231 or 48305 for that set, or you'll be taking photos of the tender!

Sorry I don't know what is actually rostered. 63601 ran the other set last weekend, 70013 ran the weekend before, 1744, 30777 and 78019 are also available so a choice of seven.

By the way, trains are non-stopping Quorn and Rothley, although the Rothley tea room (Ellis's) and garden railway were certainly still open and busy the weekend before last, and I daresay will still be.

Is the top and tail set the actual Santa and the other set the diner?

(You can tell me if there are two Santas - I think I can handle Father Christmas being in two places at the same time - it's 'cos he's magical!)

Doh, I wish they wouldn' put the 63601 on the back, so we end up with steam only being tender first, what use is that?

The Top and Tail set runs as a Santa Special and the Steam only set runs as a 'Santa Deluxe'. The Santa Deluxe lasts slightly longer than the normal Santa Special, so the children get a bit longer to Father Christmas, there are also a few other extra bits such as a cracker and a cookie.

The Steam Only set also conveys the dining coaches.

I hope that clears things up a bit?
