The picture credit identifies it as Netherton Works in Liverpool which would be the official handover in 1955 to the LMS for trials on Liverpool - Euston services before use on other WCML services. Brian Webb's book ( The Deltic Locomotives of British Rail - David & Charles Locomotive Studies ) confirms that the prototype Deltic was built at Preston Strand Road then transferred to Netherton Works for static tests before the official handover

It would be wonderful if we could see 'Deltic' run again on the main line.

It's too tall...we had to take the air horns off the cab to get it into the building at Shildon and when it went main line to Barrow Hill, the cab steps were removed to clear platforms at Sheffield. And a small lack of funding too...ah well!

Had a drunken chat with my father-in-law last night and he nearly got run-over by DELTIC at Kings Langley station whilst it was pulling a postal train back in 1957...

As the prototype had trials on the WCML, were there plans for the production class to work that route as well?

Don't remember hearing anything of that kind, the LMR wanted electrification for the WCML but the funds weren't available at the time.

what mechanically is different from the production engines if in future years someone with the funds comes forward to restore it to working order, is it capible of working again or when it was preserved was it stripped of a lot of its parts

It is missing pistons and crankshafts according to the dPS survey done on it a few years ago and the engines are not the same as the production units I'm afraid - these are more like the pure gunboat engines.

Actually the full survey was not conducted by the DPS as the loco was not at Barrow Hill long enough for it to be carried out. As Anthony correctly says the engines are type 1 Marine units and there are a number of difference compared to the rail production units so many parts are not interchangeable. However there a number of type one units in existence, the Deltic Preservation society has one in its collection and it certainly should be feasible to overhaul/rebuild at least one power unit. The other issues might be bogie related as the prototype has unique bogies abd there might be some challenges with restoring those.

There are not many Deltic enthusiasts who wouldnt love to see DP1 rora into life again one day, but as with any other project it will come down to manpower and resource, and the small matter of the wishes of the owner the NRM. Their other Deltic 55002 is being restored entirely by volunteers effort and private fund raising with the NRM helping out where they can. Could thsi team move onto DP1 when 55002 is finsihed? Well thee is no shortge of work on production Deltics for the foreseeable future but you never know ...

There are some alternative liveries on the prototype Deltic in the Railway Collection on my fotopic site (link below), including one in full production Deltic livery.
