Talking of the Christmas trains I guess 34007 is rostered for the dining trains or has 92212 been fitted with steam heating equipment? I'm on the 19th Dec dining train.
I know once before the rostered loco failed and 92212 substituted and when we boarded we were told to keep our jackets on as 92212 could not provide any heating.

9F and Nelson were running today, so I presume Wadebridge is taking over from the 9F tomorrow.

hopefully the diesels wont be on my Christmas eve train, it always ruins the experience for me.

Anyway, surely a steam loco can take 6 coaches up the line on their own, they could manage it in their heyday. Seems a bit ironic, a 1000 degree fire on wheels needs a diesel on the back because its snowy.

Perhaps the diesels are on the back to avoid the need to run round at each end of the run. This means steam heat can be applied continuously as well, which I am sure would be appreciated today!

time could be a bit tight to run round when you concider that you have to wait for the other engine to run round before you can be given the all clear to leave medstead or ropley by keeping the deisel you just run in, and wait, power the deisel up and go plus medstead cutting can be very slippery this time of year when its cold and wet you would not like to risk slipping to a stand in the cutting either side of medstead station, a shove from the deisel would make the difference between getting there and stalling

Last night 92212 was on the evening dining train and what a very good evening it was. The family enjoyed the great food, drinks and the snowy landscape (well, what we could see in the dark!). Thanks to all involved and we look forward to next years trip.

850 and 34007 were in light steam in the yard when we passed by.

On Saturday the crews were only expecting to have assistance for the first trip but somewhere down the line it was decided to leave the diesels on all day. Obviously the 9F wouldnt struggle but I guess it makes sure they dont run into problems and as has already been pointed out the continuous heat would be most welcome by the travellers. Shame the 37 was doing more than its fair share though, first train up it was drowning out the 9F.

Actually the diesel was taken off at Ropley before our last run back to Alton, and as you would expect, the 9F went up the bank beautifully. Real picture postcard stuff yesterday -who needs Lapland?
