Given the current weather, have any of the small snowploughs that were fitted to some 8F's and Black 5's survived? Has a loco ever run with one of these in preservation, I don't recall seeing one?

Can't think of any black 5s or 8fs but M.S.C 31 Hamburg ran with a miniature snowplough in the 70s and 80s, and i think that M.S.C 32 Gothenburg also carried a miniature snowplough at some point aswell.

When the Worth Valley opened in the late 60's MSC no 31 did run with a snow plough which was a modified one recovered from an 8f. I don't know if it still exists but it was lurking around Haworth yard in the late 1980's. I believe this was the inspiration behind Mr Riley making one for MSC 32 when he owned it many years ago.

Slighly off topic, but about 15 years ago I vaguely recall that a preserved 8F rescued a freight train in snow somewhere on the main line around Preston. Can anyone fill in the details?

The NYMR has some buffer beam snowploughs that came from the NRM. They used to be on display near NER Snowplough No. 18 near the turntable at Pickering, but I'm not sure where they are now.

One of the buffer beam snowploughs at the NYMR (outside the loco shed at Grosmont) belongs to NELPG as it belonged to the Q6.

Will any Heritage Railway ever get the chance to replicate Snowdrift at Bleath Gill? Now there is a photographic opportunity if ever there was one. What price a ticket for that?

your thinking of 48151 whic ran a couple of mainline freights. it ran with the tunstead lime hoppers out of the peak district as the wagons were being displaced by more modern wagons so they did a freight recreation to celebrate their passing. that loco also ran a special ballast working over the s & c about 10 years ago to celebrate the end of the major engineering works on the line. it hauled a rake of ballast wagons and had a southern queen mary break van at the rear of the train whic was used instead of a support vehicle. hope that helps

also thinking about it that same loco was used by railtrack about 12 years ago in the northwest to help clear frozen points. they connected a steam lance to the valve on the smokebox and hot/boiling water or steam was used over several nights to help unfreeze pointwork around the northwest

Freights were rescued on the S&C back in the '80s by Leander and SNG if memory serves.

Happened on WSR in 1978. Snow was so deep that the top smokebox headlamp on Victor was dislodged in a drift and remained unaccounted for until found by the P Way department after the thaw. There are a few pics around in early WSR publications mainly taken by WSW I think. Not sure how much he paid for the photo opportunity though!

The KWVR'S WD used to have a snowplough on the front in it's continental form. IIRC it was a bit bigger than the type fitted to the Black 5's and 8F's

Ironic really but it would of been more suited to this weather if they hadn't converted it to BR condition! The cab was enclosed and the engine winterised for exactly the conditions we have been having lately! Those snow ploughs seem smaller than I remembered although it is a while since i've seen a photo of it in that condition (never saw it in the flesh - being withdrawn before I was born might of played a part in that!!!)
