46115

As we know, Scots Guardsman has proved itself to be an exemplary performer on the main line since its major overhaul at Carnforth.
What I am interested to know, is just what the overhaul entailed, as it was reputed to be "knackered" whilst dismantled at Tyseley.
I read at the time that either some, or all, of the frames may have needed renewal. Is this true? How much WAS replaced?
It would be very interesting if David Smith would ever compile a book covering the overhaul of Scots Guardsman, and the restoration of Galatea.
In the meantime, does anybody have any information at all?

Richard, I asked the same questions when she was outshopped but didn't get much of an answer.

 

I don't know about 46115, but Galatea as far as I know is actually owned by a charity, The North of England Historic Railway Trust. Most railway charities have included in their aims something like 'educating and information the public' about their activities so perhaps they ought to be doing it. Don't hold your breath though

What was 46115's mainline career like in the 70s? I only recently discovered that she ran during this period.

 

I was visiting York while one of those trips was being run. We passed 46115 at Sheffield in sunshine if memory serves me correctly and then watched it arrive at York in fog! A link to the only half decent picture from that day is below.

46115 features in next week's railway journey programme with Michael Portillo. (Each weekday at 18-30 hours on BBC2) Looks like a trip over the S & C. I guess it continues his "Bradshaw/Victorian past" theme.

I agree with the earlier comments re 46115. Images of it before overhaul showed a very derelict engine in need of a heavy general. Mr Smith and his team look to have done an excellent job. Roll on "Galatea" please!....

In answer to queries about 6115's pre-WCR main line exploits, these brief notes might suffice:

Towards the end of its BR career, 46115 was probably best-known for its role, hauling the RCTS's 'Re-built Scot Commerative Rail Tour, on 13 Feb 1965, from Crewe to Carlisle and back, as very run-down but nicely-cleaned stand-in, for a failed 46160 'Queen's Westminster Rifleman'. As the last 'Scot' in service, 46115 was withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor, in January 1966, initially moving to Keighley for preservation, thence moving to the Dinting Railway Centre, in 1969.

In September1978, 6115 was first steamed in preservation (in LMS 1946 black livery) and, in the next two months, made three main line trips, over the Hope Valley (the first, a test run to Nunnery carraige sidings, Sheffield, the other two railtours to York). Changes to boiler regulations meant no more main line trips, although 6115 did venture out again, under its own steam, to 'The Great Railway Exposition', held at Liverpool Rd, in August 1980, when it ran, from Dinting, in company with 'Hardwicke' and Derek Foster's 'Jinty' 7298 - an extraordinary combination, which I was lucky enough to witness and photograph, particularly during the long lay-over at Man Vic, en route!

Actually the site (RailPictures.net)has plenty of UK stuff on it. It is without doubt the site with the best quality rail photos on it, from any country. Many of the images are just out of this world. Way ahead of anything being produced in the UK.

there's a pic of 6115 at dinting in a cosmetically restored state, looking quite snazzy with red stripes, on the railway herald photo section of the web site.

Er, otherwise know as LMS 1946 passenger livery, ie. gloss black with maroon (not 'crimson lake') and straw lining. 6115 was the first converted 'Royal Scot' to be fitted with smoke deflectors, in 1947, and the only one to be done so under LMS ownership, hence the interest in this very attractive livery, whilstunder Dinting's custodianship. This is the livery which 6233 is due to carry, for the remainder of 2010.

Again, historically accurate, 6233 having received smoke deflectors in 1946, received the LMS passenger livery in 1947, which it carried until 1950 when it went into BR experimental blue.

 

Hmm.. a bit off topic but I recieved a postcard entitled 'LMS CREWE WORKS' with the legend BUILDING 'CORONATION' CLASS ENGINES, and the stream lined casing is blue. dated 1937 by Rethi.

 

That blue would be Caledonian Blue, and any loco number on the postcard must have been 6220/1/2/3 or -4. The next batch of five was in crimson lake, and no more were built as streamlined after that.
