As Richieboy will know better than me, the very sprightly Sierra Leone 85 is limited in what she will pull by her 15 tons of adhesive weight. The L&M Kitsons had no more adhesive weight but around four or five tons of additional mass to haul around before any horsepower appeared at the drawbar to pull a paying load. Thus, curvature permitting, the original Barsi 0-8-4T design would be better for the W&L.

I think that the Calthrop/Leeds Forge demonstration line in Leeds used one of the 0-8-4Ts, so a replica could be justified for U.K. use. Even so, this design would have no better adhesive weight than a W&L Beyer and would still have extra weight to lug up hill.

As a single fairlie has already been built, and the ballybunnion and listowel monorail has a replica now, then my NG new build has to be a replica of "Fire Queen" (as at Penryhn Museum)

Predictably, a Manx Northern Sharp Stewart loco or one of the 2 6 2 tanks that Beyer Peacock proposed for the IMR after the war. A West Clare diesel would be nice too....

    Where's your spirits of adventure?

Apart from the lovely suggestion of Fire Queen (tho' I'd prefer Jenny Lind with the cab) why not any of the following Trewithen, Kitchener, Burnett Hall, Argyll/Atlantic/Fisher, Miner, Smelter, Amalthea or just for her splendid aesthetics - nothing else but the famed and beautiful Lady Mallaby Deely?

Or one of the NCC's compound 2-4-2 tanks from the Antrim 3-foot lines?

I see that and I'll raise your offer with a 'Lady Boyd' (but would secretly prefer a 109).

Can I start with a clean sheet and build an NGG 17 ? Might be needed in about 10 years.

I like the sound of what they are doing at Kempton. My 9 year old nephew regularly reminds me that it was his best day out 'ever' watching the engine there that was 'twice as big as daddies house' running so slowly and so quietly on steam. They certainly have some space at Kempton thats for sure. If you have never been, its well worth a visit when the engine is running.

What about the C&M 0-6-2's or WHR Gowrie? Wouldn't Argyll look good at the end of a rake of C&M coaches as well?

On reflection the Hunslet 0-6-4 Beddgelert would be a stunning looking loco to have about the place too.

    Very pretty indeed.

Gowrie would be nice, dual braked so it can run WHR and FR stock, or maybe a Campbletown 0-6-2 in 2ft6 gauge, i seem to remember reading they were originally designed to be convertable to 2ft6 from 2ft3, incase the owners decided to widen the gauge (?)

    Hi,
Don't know if you are aware but an outline drawing of a NGG 17 Garratt class was prepared by the late Dusty Durrant in 1991. It was an enormous loco for two foot gauge, around 90 inches wide over the cylinders and 60 feet long over the couplers. Being of 2-8-2 & 2-8-2 wheel arrangement. It was totally modern with a gas producer combustion system with twin lempor exhausts and was twice the power of a standard NGG 16. It was a design for the one time proposal to re-open the old Stuartstown railway (Donnybrook - Umzinto) in Natal, South Africa. The scheme came to nothing in the face of cheap road competition.

    Regards,
    John.

  20. Whilst i would love to see gowrie for the WHHR And FFR co i really think that a updated steam loco needs to be built With modern technology For example a standard tank style engine with GPCS and lempor ejector roller bearings throuought and other items as i really feel that the fr is asking far too much of the engines

or dare i say a cut down and butcherd kalahari 2-8-2
