    The ex Longmoor Military Railway Avonside saddle tank is being moved from Shildon to Milestones museum at Basingstoke for display. It should be arriving about 1500 on the 17th January 2010.

    Now that is a good looking engine. A far more worthy contender in the NRM's overhaul queue than anything else IMO. utterly useless with more than one carriage behind it, but then it could be argued that most railways use engines far more powerful than they really need. How many other engines can there be out there that were built purely as a means of their owners getting to work?

    On the subject of the LMR, Does anyone know what the situation is with the ex LMR S160 Franklin D Roosevelt? According to the HRA database it's offsite undergoing repairs, but there's nothing more on the MHR's website.

    I don't know about the S160, but "Gazelle" would indeed be a wicked wheeze. However, it's the centrepiece of the Col Stephens Museum at Tenterden and much loved there. Perhaps someone could build a replica, it would be great fun!

    This article, from the Col Stephens Museum website, suggests Gazelle may in fact have been built for fun (in fulfilment of a boyhood dream) rather than as a means to get to work. If so it would be entirely approppriate if someone offered to restore it, or build a replica, for a wheeze!

    Franklin D Roosevelt was never a Longmoor Loco. It was brought back from Greece along with the two Austerity 2-10-0's. The last time I saw it, it was at South Coast Steam, supposedly under overhaul but I don't think anything was happening to it. AFAIK, it is still there.
