The railway is short of siding space for stock, are there any plans to resolve this issue in the medium to long term?:spy:

I must admit that you have a point there as the Swanage appears to be collecting more stock than is being used of disposed of, commendable though that may be.

Perhaps they need a one in one out policy?

    Regards
    Chris

They may already have one - I don't think that there have been very many new arrivals at the Swanage in recent years, and they have started to move some stuff off site for storage, I believe. I also know of at least one carriage that they have been offering for sale. If they get their new carriage shed at ?Herston that should create extra sidiong space and relieve some of the pressure.

In fact, if you look around most of the major lines now whilst they might be accepting occasional vehicles by and large their fleets are static or shrinking. The reasons for this seem to be that steam-era vehicles are all but gone from the National network so are nor available for purchase, whilst established lines try to hang on to their good stock and get rid of the no-hopers to the new generation lines, for whom this is about the only way they can procure rolling stock

Well, in the long term i know there is the plan to convert the old oil sidings at furzebrook into either a new MPD or carriage sidings.
But at Swanage there is no space and it is hard to get space elsewhere because the area is scientifically protected.

There is a problem with space there, but there is still a shortage of money there. But considering they nearly went bankrupt a few years
back, theyve bounced back well. Do also consier their operating days.

I believe that preparatory work (removal of spoil) for the construction of the carriage shed at Herston will be beginning shortly (if it isn't already in progress) alongside or shortly after renewal of the track at Herston (DBS have a ballast train due onto the branch on Tuesday for the latter).

Quite a few wagons that are never used, a walurs ballast wagon, another brake van (I think came from the ex Brighton Works) and a few coaches that wont be restored (if ever) for a great many years.

Thanks to lee I have had a good look at your stock list Lewis, and I must say there is certainly some stock there.although it needs some TLC.

Problem is whee do you find the volunteers and finance to restore?, especially as one would have to work in the open?

    Regards
    Chris

He's still there, on the Council of Management.

And as has been said, we now have an off-site storage facility (and no I'm not going to give away the location, its one of the terms of the lease) for 3 coaches and a couple of wagons, together with stores, and a project is underway for the foundations of a 8 coach carriage shed on new sidings at Herston. In addition, Car 347 is leaving the railway for pastures new. This should give us considerably more room to play with.

I do agree with others though that there is far too much crap also lying around that will never get restored.

Chris, the 2 Queen Mary's that are still there are owned by (I believe) a group called the 'Queen Mary Appreciation Society'; one is in traffic (and was the one that travelled up to Eastleigh 100), the other has recently been in, and may still be in (I've not been there for a while) Herston Works being overhauled. The particularly poor condition one left the railway some time ago for Llangollen.
What railway hasn't got a shortage of money?

I'm afraid the situation is more complex than that, that is just a list of the SCPG's wagons, rather than all of the vehicles on the railway.

.........a nd if you dig a little deeper, quite a few of the wagons on the list have been sold or scrapped

Ah thanks 61624, so am I to understand that the SCPG,s list has not been updated for a while and that other vans/wagons details have gone unrecorded then?

    Best regards
    Chris

    Chris

I imagine you've got a copy, but if not Steve Best's stocklist file seems pretty comprehensive for Swanage.

As stated previously the list linked here is only a list of the SCPG's vehicles rather than all of those on the railway. Other vehicles may have been purchased by the SCPG but not recorded, but not being connected with the group myself I couldn't comment.

    Regards

    Nick

I'm only going on what is there in the public domain and trying to help people from being misled by what is there....sounds like a rhetorical question on your part though.
