That is a very nice model indeed! Fantastic level of detail - including the cab fittings!

I want one too but no model could be a patch on the real thing!

i dont see them come up very often.
i have only ever seen 2 hunslets for sale.
one was as basic as you can order from tme, coal fired, and meths fired. 1200
another was more or less full spec, coal, meths firing, 1900.

Slightly off topic but I know number 9 had the height of it's cab considerably raised when rebuilt by the BMR but has it been lowered again? If so, was there any specific reason for this other than it looks better? When was it done?

This thread seems to be digressing all over the place!

Both Nos 8 and 9 had cab roofs raised during their overhauls at the Brecon Mountain Railway's Pant works. No 9 in 1990 and No 8 in 1996. To my knowledge they haven't been altered since.

I never worked on the engines when they had lower cabs, but I'm told the headroom for the crews was fairly tight so that is probably why they were extended.

    Hope that helps

They have only been raised to my knowlege, they probarbly would have been higher in design from the outset if the railway didnt go underneith the M&MR bridge, still a bit low around the cab door banged my head a time or two when i first started

Thanks for your answers re. cab height. Funnily enough, I found an article in Steam Railway from this time last year (no 358) which says that the 9's cab height was raised 6" during the rebuild but that it has 'subsequently been reduced by 3" '. Implies it was both locos but I guess it could mean that 8's cab wasn't done as high as 9....

Have they got the 'wrong end of the stick' at Steam Railway (that never happens does it..... ;) )? I wouldn't want to doubt the word of people who actually work with the locos!

As I understand it the cabs were raised due to the shortage of headroom inside, however, when the loco's came back they were prone to more noise, especially drumming, in the cab caused by the change. This was a good few years ago now mind you.

I assume they have tried lowering again to reduce the amount of noise created.

I had a short run around the yard on #7 (with original height cab) a few years ago and found, at over 6', even the middle of the cab was a bit on the low side for me!

I guess that is why the driver and fireman spent most of the time leaning near the side of the loco.

As suggested, they were indeed designed with low cabs due to the bridge they passed under, according to the C.C.Green Bible on all things VofR.

Yer thats pretty much the book i found that out from, damn good book to read, currently reading his Cambrian lines vol 1 at the moment, already read vol2, back to front, shame theres no vol 3 from barmouth junction to phwelli. And the drivers and fireman still work with their head out the cabs, to good a sound to miss out on ;)

Just watched the excellent Oakwood video on the VoR from 1994 (well worth watching for anyone who is interested in the railway - not sure if it's now on DVD?). The video comments that the cab floors were raised by BR when oil firing was adopted to accommodate the pipe-work underneath, hence raising the cab height when numbers 8 & 9 were overhauled.

Not really on topic, but here is a link to a ride around the Echills Wood Railway yesterday on a 7.25" miniature VoR loco - me driving and concentrating too much on the video, and not on the fact I'd left the injectors on, hence the whiteout - d'oh!

I'ts a lovely loco with a lovely bark, and it doesn't clank as much as it sounds like....

    Hi there,
I can tell you that the BMR rebuilt No.9's cab 6" higher but when it came back to Aber the engine looked so stupid next to the Carriages that we at the VOR reduced it by 3" again and by the time No.8 was rebuilt then the lesson had been lernt!! So to answer the question yes it has been lowered and no no other reason as far as I can work out!
