There are many deserving projects in need of financial support, and sadly this venerable icon perhaps needs more than most to keep her flying.

Fair comment Martin, and unless a major benefactor comes along I suspect this will be an annual
    problem.
Probably akin with that green LNER machine at York which has regularly swallowed a lot of cash every 7 years and left many people with empty pockets.

It is a wonderful machine but I cannot help thinking that all that cash would be good spread around a bit more; for instance the Beaufighter at East Fortune is still awaiting assembly and display years after being bought after a massive (and most successful) public appeal.

I think the money would be better spent in ensuring her long term survival rather than flying her until such times as her owning group run out of cash.

The Beaufighter at Duxford is gradually nearing completion but I believe it is destined for the USA.It was complete enough to be towed around the hangar during my last visit during the late summer. Colin.

I think there are enough surviving static Vulcans,Hendon,Cosford,Southend come to mind, plus a few more I cannot bring to mind (an ageing brain !!) so one flying is a bonus,it's a pity a Victor couldn't be restored to flying condition although I believe the Victors were all taken to the end of their fatigue life.

Disagree entirely Jim. The ONLY way to experience a Vulcan is to see and hear one in the air. We have several static ones to ensure the type's long term survival.

I do agree, its an absolutely exhilerating experience to see the Vulcan in flight but she needs goverment support to keep her flying if not I fear her owning group will simply run out of money.

Please dont get me wrong, I want to see her fly but I also want her long term survival ensured as she could well be the last flyable Vulcan as many of the others will need shed amounts of money spent to get them airworthy.

Whatever is raised for the Vulcan now, it has a finite life as it is quite short on both Airframe and engine hours.

The commitment from the owning group was to fly her for 10 seasons and then retire her. She's had two seasons so eight to go and that will come round alarmingly quickly.

At 2pm today, we had raised £170.720. XH558 needs to get to £400,000 by January 31st and £800,000 by March 31st.

It is now £230k by the end of January and 400k by the end of March. But she's come back from worse situations, right?

If theres one appeal which deserves to succed its this one, i contributed last year and will do again, i was fortunate to see ( and hear!) this magnificent aircraft on two occasions last year, it is an amazing machine which can only be appreciated when she is in the air - where she truely belongs. My wife who shows a passing interest in my interests could not beeieve the sight and sound of this when we saw it at Windermere and the Battle of Britain Members day - that says it all to me, ordinary members of the public with no interest in things machinical stopped in thier tracks. Dig deep for this if you can - its the last one and we will never see the like of it again

its a pity that the RAF does not have a programe of keeping a selection of its iconic aircraft in flying condition very much akin to the Bof B flight
at the moment in private hands its very expensive to keep a cold war era fast jet or bomber in the air and in a lot of cases you cant get caa approval so such sights as a lightning with full re heat will never be seen in uk skys again , the victor that so nearly took off was the closest she will get , isnt she life expired?

Martin, the RAF gave up XH558 because they didn't have any money to keep it. Money situation is up to just over £173,000 as of this afternoon.
