No I do not currently volunteer
I see that Railway Touring Company are already taking full page adverts in the local Crewe papers, for steam tours in the North West, both those taking place in the next couple of months and during the holiday season.

it may be something to do with it being rather early in the season and the exceptionally cold winter we are having, unless you actually live in the London area and can get to the starting station and get home again without waiting about for a train or bus for long journey home in the freezing cold it arent much fun, also I went on the Bristo tol Paddington trip with 6024 just before Christmas, it was a freezing cold day the coach I was in had no heating, on the return they transferred us to another coach where it was so hot it was like being in a turkish bath, then when we got off at Bristol where it was below freezing it felt colder than ever, so on that experience I've made up my mind not to go any trips until the early spring the days are longer and hopefully will be warmer, even their low fares do not tempt me.

Think yourself lucky ! i'm risking my neck by going on Eurostar for valentines weekend... here's hoping it's not spent inside a tunnel, though haulage to london by french diesels would be interesting I dont think my wife would see it that way.. or believe I didnt know it was happening in advance :)

Its good for the punters, but I would have thought pretty high risk for RTC.If people get the idea that if they wait until a few weeks before travel they are likely to be offered a discount, then they are unlikely to want to book early. That then starts a vicious circle of trips being cancelled due to poor bookings ect.!

So far as I am aware RTC is the first railtour operator to do this and it will be interesting to see if they continue to do so.I suppose that as the emails are only sent to past customers the revenue loss is limited.

Interesting to note that some of the North West trips are being advertised in the local press ( Mirror / Trinity titles ) and being promoted through Newmarket Travel.

Cumbrian Mountain Express on 19th March looks to be well subscribed if not already full. Great routing with a star loco, 70013, makes for an interesting day.

They seem to have scaled back on the North Wales Coast Express this year running just two trips out of Liverpool. Reduced capacity should match demand.

Give RTC credit for putting up a wide a varied selection, particularly for the NW.
