So I see a picture of a pipe, but not in any context, sorry to doubt you but that could be anywhere.

I'm not going to be impolite and ask if Mr Hosking is putting his own money into sorting 46100, but lets at least take a positive view that with Mr Hosking's undoubted reputation for high standards with his own engines, with him in charge of the Trust, and Crewe doing the work, there should be a positive outcome.

Surely then things can move on, instead of raking over what has gone wrong in the past.

Two more class 7 express locomotives out and about in 2010, that has to be good. (70000 and 46100....)

You have the OPs word that it is fitted to 6100, and the repair visible in the photo is obviously of epically poor quality, whatever its use on a loco.

Hmm - is that some sort of butt-weld? What is the duty of that pipe?

Admittedly all my experience of steam piping in on power stations but the only place I could think to see a joint like that would be on a rain water pipe from the gutters of the building.

I cannot imagine any craftsman wishing to leave a job in that state whether it was for a drainpipe or anything else.

Since nobody has provided information as to the context in which that repair was made, when and by whom, it's not really possible to make judgement.

Sorry but personally I just would not leave a pipe joint in that state whatever its purpose.

Neither would I but do we know for sure that 6100 departed Southall with the joint in that condition, was it rectified first or have Crewe rectified it since?
On one railway where I was volunteering some time ago a chap was set a task and he made a complete pig's ear of it. Now had I taken pictures then and stuck it on the internet, people would no doubt have said what a numpty the Chief Engineer was for allowing work like it. The fact is that he gave the chap a bit of a bo***cking and got the job redone to the correct spec. Now I'm not saying this is the case with the pipe joint we're discussing but one picture without any another corroboration is insufficient IMHO to condemn an individual.

Quite agree with your argument Stan........funny thing is, what a lot of these armchair experts/critics don't realise is that alot of the work was done by paid staff, some of which i beleive actualy went on to work at Crewe......

This is the problem with 'proving' something like this, its extremely difficult to do with a few photos. Personally im inclined to take people by their word when it comes to the horror stories about 6100 because while i used to be sceptical about what was being said, whats happened subsequently - especially in the last 12 months - as well as whats been written about the state of 4472 has left me, sadly, prepared to believe they're true.

you lot are moaning about the work on royal scot and saying about crap work on the loco, you must remember that the loco was not in a finished state when going to crew, when we fond out on the day that it was going to crew, to put things back on royal scot in a unfinished state, so in a nut shell ,half finished lococ went to crew, 81c fitter

Thats an interesting point saying that it was 'half finished', considering that, by the time it went to Crewe, by all accounts, it had consumed well over its original budget for completion ....

So it was over budget Mr Dragon..........perhaps you would like to quote me just one steam loco restoration that has come in under budget, methinks you will be one hell of a time looking.Perhaps one day someone will take the time to list all the things found requiring attention after it arrived at Southall 80% stripped that were'nt budgeted for..................before you throw the large handfull of crap in the fan and scatter it far and wide do some homework, get some facts and stop guessing and making assumptions and stop slating people you don't even know, your just making yourself look like someone with an axe to grind or a grudge!

At the end of 82 pages worth of discussion we still have very little in the way of factual information. I don't think we even know for sure that it was behind budget, although I think various statements from the Bressingham Trustees suggest that it was. The only real solid piece of information that we have is that it has had to be lifted off its wheels for axlebox work, which should have been dealt with in the early stages of the overhaul, before the boiler was refitted.

About the only thing we can safely say is that it was well behind schedule and that the project management appears to have been extremely poor. I haven't heard any reports of Bressingham Trustees associated offering to resign over IT, which has also cost them several steam traction engines (and I believe a steam lorry as well) but it sounds as though they ought to.

No axe to grind, just interested. By the same measure it seems like you are desperately trying to excuse things and create a cover up.

I think that quite a few of us know a lot more but are reluctant to spell it out because it is we have only learnt these things second hand, albeit from impeccable sources intimately involved with steam and overhauling of locos very much at the sharp end of things. But,then again, most of us only learn anything by listening to other people. We can't all go knocking on the door at Crewe and asking to have a look. I remain amazed that there are those who are still in denial of what has happened. But, then, there are those who believe the earth is flat....
