No sign of the air pump which is now fitted to 5029, but when was the photo taken?

5029 ran as 5069 on a railtour (apologies not know exact date) but I think it was from sheffield back down to Didcot . Remember her first stint of amin line running was from Didcot when the GWS had an involvement in her .

I do wish that they had not done that! I'm new to all this, but just out of curiosity, was it controversial when Nunney Castle appeared with the air pump? I think it spoils her front aspect so much.

I expect (in fact, I know) there are many people that share your opinion about the airpump that is fitted to 5029. As it happens I also shared your opinion before I was involved with the engine although my view soon changed.

To some degree it does ruin the aesthetics of the loco's front end. However, it is very easy to get at for maintenance and cleaning which helps us a lot. Also, there really isn't anywhere else to put it unless we were to completely change the brake system, which would involve removing the entire vacuum system. If the loco was to have a brake system like 60019 (Air Braked with Vacuum capability) I expect the pump could go between the frames as there wouldn't be a huge Vacuum Cylinder in the way but there would be a lot of work involved to achieve this. The pump could go in the Tender like 35028's but this would compromise the water capacity somewhat.

Anyway, from a maintenance point of view its more or less in a perfect position, and it's reassuring when you can see everything working!

In a strange way I've grown to like the airpump on 5029, probably because i'm so used to it now. It's not that bad... is it?

Out of interest, what sort of system has 6024 got? I am sure the pump is between the frames there.

6024 has a virtually identical system, but there is more room between the frames on a 'King' compared to a 'Castle'.
