Having watched and listened to most of the you tube footage I believe the problem started before Wigan. Something is amiss as 6115 coasts into the platform. Anyway I hope the repairs dont take too long.

Well I'm afraid I have heard some 'armchair' experts, but, to base a serious comment on a few videos, how can you possibly be in a position to deduce more than the experienced crew on the loco and in the support coach.
Or is this just another attempt to discredit WCRC.

Yes, it is - and you still can't spell. It's 'Guardsman' (and co-incidence, no apostrophe after loco and mis-spelling, for that matter).

Is it really any wonder that we do not make public comments about our affairs?

Now go and do something more useful with your life.

Too much armchair woffling from so-called 'experts'

    17th January 2010

    Dear Customer,

We are all very sorry for the failure of the Cotton Mill Express last Saturday. And the inconvenience it caused you.

Unfortunately, the incident has caused considerable damage to the middle engine of the locomotive. It seems the middle big end disintegrated shortly before Eccles this resulted in the centre piston being driven through the middle cylinder.

We hope the casting can be repaired otherwise a new one will be required. Due to the damage to the locomotive we are not in a position to arrange another re-run of this tour.

We are returning your payment in full, if you paid on your card your payment will be refunded back to your card, if you paid by cheque you will find a cheque enclosed.

Once again our most sincere apologies for the problems caused we hope it will not deter you from travelling with us again.

We thank you for your patience during this difficult time.

    Kind Regards,

    Nigel Dobbing
    Managing Director

There does appear to be an awful lot of talk coming from the proverbial ‘armchairs’, but the fact remains that the correspondent who was there at Parkside Junction (I cannot recall his name … as, for some curious reason, his post has been deleted) was absolutely spot-on in his assumptions.

If one were so bold as to question the reason behind this, no doubt one would be referred back to
…. which, of course, is a ludicrous statement to make. Those at NR are already well aware of absolutely everything that happens on their ‘patch’ and are extremely unlikely to take any notice of anything said by a bunch of keyboard tappers who have so little else going on in their sad little lives that they have to spend their time perpetually in front of a computer screen with the object of finding fault in each other’s words!

As I write this, I observe the absolutely idiotic comments that have just appeared from “Leander” and I would fully endorse the immediate response from “J Shuttleworth”. Whatever the failings of WCR – and I personally don’t think that that organisation should be held to blame for anything that occurred with 46115 – it is mere coincidence that two such unfortunate episodes occurred so close together. The standard of work done at Carnforth has, otherwise, been beyond reproach. And, as regards big-end failures, and the like, no matter how well we look after the engines in our cars, for example, these things DO occasionally happen and sometimes totally unexpectedly… but the consequences of ignoring the signs are usually catastrophic!

Although lessons have clearly been learnt, I would now have every confidence that WCR will fix their pride-and-joy and that, whatever the future might hold for 46115, alleged bad workmanship will never again be brought into question. I wish them success for the future.

Continue to ignore the idiots James and continue your great work which does so much to further the success of UK mainline steam. Best wishes for the return of 46115.

Well I think that posts 303 and 305 are just a waste of time and a different approach from the powers at be needs to be appreciated.

I have locked this thread temporarily while the mods decide what to do with it. There have been numerous members asking for it to be locked and looking at some posts I can see why.

Very good news that the repairs are not as serious as first thought. Both Ian and the WCRC will definately perform miracles on her, and hopefully she'll still be at the head over Shap, the G&SW and the ECML.

More importantly, why did it happen and how do they ensure that it doesn't happen again. <BJ>?

Indeed it is interesting how such a thing could occur, however accidents do happen.

Why does anything mechanical fail? if we knew the answer to that it would be a perfect world.
You cannot ensure it will not happen again, don't you think that it would have been prevented in the first place if at all possible?

Wake up, get a life and live in the real world, accidents and mechanicial failures WILL and DO happen, nobody can ensure it won't happen again, failures just turn up out of the blue, nobody has a magic wand or a crystal ball to see the future. PLEASE DO NOT start this all over again on another thread after the other one was locked, it should have been locked long before it was.

whoah people, theres no need to fly off the handle. Sometimes there is a way in which mechanical failures can be prevented, like changing core plugs on standard 5s to stop cylinders blowing up. Please, if you dont know dont just fly off the handle, just keep your thoughts to yourself.

So what was the original reason for failure???
