    In no particular order...

Kelling Heath Park: Great view, nice little halt just the right size for a Railbus on a summer's evening!
Llangollen: Nice friendly station with bridge to phot on and scenic river alongside.
Bury Bolton Street: Like the enclosed urban atmosphere - and the unusual (for preservation) station building. Will be even better with a second canopy!

Some great choices mentioned already, but for me it has to be Woody Bay, especially out of season with the mist rolling in off the moor.
    Pure atmosphere.

Oakworth on the KWVR - immaculately preserved - still in year 1905 - coal fires, gas lighting &c
Damems - hidden jewel of the KWVR - smallest station in England, in the depths of the Worth Valley, almost inaccessible by road
    Llangollen for it's riverside setting.

Yes, all those suggested are great places to watch the railway working.
To add to the list I would suggest Dduallt on the FR and Colby on the Isle of Man for stations to let the world go by interupted by the occasional train.

    Cheers, Neil

Crowcombe: Nice place to live I'm sure, but I liked it better before the houses were built.
Woody Bay: Yes. But I'm remembering it before the re-opening when the site was semi-derelict. Talk about atmosphere...

For me it has to be:

Bodmin General, beautiful little cornish terminus.
Kingswear, a typical big country terminus, with the long sweeping platform and overall roof, pub on the end of the platform too.
Churston, big country station with 9 coach original platforms. The modern alterations to the UP side dont look too bad. Pub right next door. Workshops to peer into, couple of semaphores and a box would be good but we can dream!
    Bodiam, lovely little station!
Woody Bay on Lynton and Barnstaple! Credit to a small little railway!

To me Horsted Keynes is a fantastic example of what preservation should be about. So much attention to detail, it's very dificult to find anything out of place. Even on a wet winters day last week, the station reeked of atmosphere, coal fires in waiting rooms and booking hall, the lovely bar, the fantastic new buildings and canopy on platforms 1 & 2which look like they've always ben there. The attention to detail is so good that it's almost impossible to tell which platforms have a new building and which are original.

Put the E4 and Maunsell set there and it's Southern perfection!

    My favourite stations are-
Llangollen Railway- Llangollen, Berwyn and Carrog. I am surprised that Berwyn has not be mentioned before as it is a popular photographic location.
Welsh Highland Railway- Rhyd-Ddu and Beddgelert - high up in the hills surrounded by Snowdonia National Park.
Snowdon Mountain Railway- Snowdon Summit Station- At 3,500 feet it is has an UNBEATABLE VIEW (on a clear day!)
Bluebell Railway- Horsted Keynes on a quiet operating day (non- gala day) to capture the atmosphere of a country station. With 5 platforms it must be the largest heritage railway station.
Paignton & Dartmouth Rly- Kingswear .

Your eye for detail is obviously an important part , I would agree with you whole heartedly that this is what gives the atmosphere.

Difficult as I can only comment on the few I've visited or can remember a sufficent amount to comment. My favourites are:

Definately agree with Oakworth on the KWVR.

Prefer Rhyd Ddu on the WHR but Beddgelert has lots of potential particualy once the sheep are kept at bay and the building is completed.

Penrhyn is a gem on the FR and like others I have stayed at the hostel there.

    Regards

    Duncan

Has to be Berwyn. Fantastic setting, aswell as being slap bang in the middle of a 1 in 80 gradiant.

The tea room and GWR ambiance ain't too bad either...

Has to be without doubt Horsted Keynes, especially when the taurpalined coaches are moved to sheffield park and the future Ardingly branch rebuilt. Pure unspoilt 1950's atmosphere, the jewel in preservation's crown.
