Found this today. It was also mentioned on BBC Radio York for a while.

So why is Mallard off to Shildon? Surely it ought to be seen alongside 6229 to illustrate the streamliner era?

Will the NRM pose 6229 alongside 4468 before it leaves... this would be an interesting photo oppourtunity, maybe even if 6000 and 35029 (or 35028 when it visits in May?) were to join them and have a real view of the biggest of the big four.

Shildon would seem an odd long term home for 4468 ? what will be the new star attraction at the NRM ?

Bit of a bizarre move, taking your flagship exhibit from your HQ.

Mixed feelings on this - it's a shame that Mallard & Duchess of Hamilton haven't been posed together, but then again, never say 'never', eh? Having said that, it's nice to 'ring the changes' at Shildon, & I'm sure that Mallard will be a magnet for visitors.

As for having Tornado do the move - again it's a coup for the A1 crowd :)

At least you'll be able to have a decent look at SECR 737 from all angles now.

Its been said before but the A1 trust has got to have the greatest publicity machine of all time.

I cant understand moving Mallard one bit.

You would think it was being moved to the moon from some of the comments!

A temporary move to Shildon for an exhibition or for a year or so would be fair enough, but moving one of three star attractions away (the other two being Scotsman and Rocket you could maybe include 6229) for the forseeable future? I think there will be some disappointed visitors to York who have gone to see those big 3.

Will Mallard require any workshop attention to be towed on Network Rail metals?

Edit -- Moving Mallard to the moon would just be showing off

It is the star attraction and there will be many disappointed visitors to the NRM when it is Shildon , there has to be a very good reason to move her.

I like the idea of the Line up with Clan Line and 6229 in May.

I hear that Mark Allatt is already investigating the possiblity of a liquid oxygen feed to the grate, and "heavy water" for the boiler feed to overcome the lack of air and gravity on the way - might have to go oil fired though, as trying to get floating coal through the hole in a space suit might be beyond even the A1 crew.

  14. As i understand it i mallard moving makes sense as theres NRM+ comming online very soonso the great hall will be closed and unable to be accesable to the public

If someone is going to the NRM to see Rocket they will be disappointed anyway, since it's been at he Science Museum in Kensington for ages, unless someone was desperate to see the cutaway or the replica. Surely it was part of the contract when building Shildon to rotate all the engines in the collection at some point.

Asuming this will be a DBS job, I wonder how they will go about the brake force issue? I remember when 5972 moved 6229 to Crewe (for the last Open Day) a number of Mk1s were tagged on to create an almost fully fitted (except 6299) Vac-braked train. Is 6229 through-piped for Air or will some 'plumbing' be required?

    Regards
    Will

This could be an insidious first step to downgrading and even closing the NRM

I somehow doubt that, surely Steve Davies wouldn't have taken the job on if he knew the museum was going to close and move?

More than likely it is an opportunity to try out a few ideas in the main hall at York as a prelude to NRM+. I wonder if the dynamometer car will be going with it?

    Regards,

    Dan

Care to expand on this? Not sure I follow your logic, tbh.
