There is also the issue of the wrought iron wheels on the Adams Radial. I read somewhere that these would need replacing if the loco was to go back into regular service. Item also said that nobody makes wrought iron wheels these days. OK so steel ones could be made as replacements but that "wrecks" the loco from an industrial archaeology point of view.

Forge welded is the correct term and the rail inspectorate wouldn't be too keen on them, which is probably why they need replacing with cast steel. This problem also affects several NRM locos such as the Sterling Single and Gladstone.

The railway could do what the NRM does and keep the originals in store, replacing them when the locomotive is out of ticket to allow the new ones to be re-profiled. Just a suggestion, which is neither here nor there before anyone accuses me of being 'armchair' (that 'Dukedog' thread is making me feel uneasy at the moment).

Thanks for the correction. Just as well I got some mileage in behind the Stirling Single in the 80s then. And that's the 1980s not the 1880s before some wit says anything. :)

Logical solution. Which NRM locos are so treated by the way?
Ignore those who would paint you as an "armchair" enthusiast. Not that I'm suggesting you are one.

You could probably make an informative museum exhibit around the original wheelset, explaining why it has been changed and the original and modern construction methods.

Something that gives hope for all of us who want to see Green Arrow back in steam is that there are those at the NRM who appreciate that the monobloc cylinder casting that cayused it to be preserved is pretty uninformative whilst tucked away inside the locomotive. There is, therefore the possibility that one day it will be removed to go on display, where it can be better interpreted for the layman, with perhaps a new mnoobloc or conversion to separate cylinders to get the engine back running. So perhaps one day there will be a precedent for this type of approach, even if not yet. For the time being, though, I think the Bluebell is probably looking to overhaul engines that can be turned around a bit quicker in the works. I'm surprised the 9F hasn't been considered yet, I thought it was supposed to be in pretty good condition.

I was under the impression that the Bluebells 9F 92240 needed some quite extensive / expensive boiler repairs! (Sorry if we have vered a bit off topic).

I'm not sure, but I read in Steam Railway last year that this was an idea regarding 'Green Arrow's monobloc cylinder casting (see above post, didn't see it myself until it was too late!), to keep the monobloc in store, and replace it with the three separate castings fitted to later members of the class. I have a strange recollection that the parts of 'Oliver Cromwell' replaced during overhaul were catalogued and kept in store (was there a crack in the original chimney casting or something?). Also, what happened to 'Lord Nelson's old smokebox after the overhaul/restoration at Eastleigh Works?

Anyway, I quite like the idea of creating an exhibit of the cast wheelsets for the 0415 class.

There's still a lot of Nellie in store at York, including the smokebox - and plenty of bits of other locos too.

A snippet in this week's online Railway Herald says that the T9's overhaul is on schedule, so fans can now dare to make plans for the B & W gala in September.

Any locomotive that's unique in steam is a mouth-watering prospect, even if it might only manage two or three coaches up the hill.

By the way, I think I prefer it when a project goes off the radar for a few months, like this one, and reappears with news of real progress. So much nicer than accompanying a saga, don't you think?

Great to here the news regarding 30120. I really hope it will come to the Bluebell, as a BR lined black T9 matched with the Bluebell's BR(S) green Bulleid carriages would look stunning.

Is it going to be resident on the B&WR? Do they own it? Is it powerful enough to run their services in Summer or will be it used on a more occasional basis? Sorry for that plethora of questions!

Owned by the NRM, as I understand it it will be ostensibly based at the BWR but available for visits to other lines, I guess in a similar way to 30587.

It will be interesting to see how some people will cope with it up the banks, particularly on a greasy rail, but I know a couple of enginemen in particular who I'm sure won't have too many problems with it.

Well, offering to lend the B&W a couple of said carriages for photo charters might increase the chance of that happening. If you give, you tend also to receive.

i have fond memories of the old girl also, i wasnt working at ropley whilst she was in ticket but used to go down almost every week end to ride the trains, when i joined the loco, she was concidered too weak to be used but i did spend several days cleaning it i prefer her in the 1950.s black livery but am glad just to be able to one day see her steam again if she does come down south to either the MHR or the Bluebelle i will defo try to see her in fact if 31806 is still on the MHR when she does, that would be great also , any chance on the bluebelle painting their U into BR black because im sure that a southern mogol and T9 on a bullied rake might just catch a few peoples imagination

Without wishing to turn this into the inevitable livery debate but I doubt there's little chance of the U class being painted in BR livery. The Maunsell Locomotive Society own the U and and all the other Maunsell locos on the Bluebell and their general policy is that all the locos must be in Maunsell livery, Stowe is in Malachite but when it's eventually overhauled it's coming straight back out in olive green. It would be great to see both the T9 and 31806 double-heading with a lined black 1638 on the Bluebell but I guess that sadly it's unlikely to happen.

didnt 2 mogols haul a rail tour to the bluebelle before it closed? its a pity that the Maunsell LS dont bring in the changes as an engine comes up for repainting once the green begins to look a bit jaded given that they have the coaches
given that now non registered engines can be hauled in light steam by deisel in the future will this be the way that guest engines arrive once east grinstead is conected up to the rest of the bluebelle , it would be good to see 30120 even if its behind an 37 or 73 arrive at the bluebelle under its own steam and as the swanage and mid hants are all now main line connected would this be a cost effective way to arrange loco swops
