Does anyone have any further news of 44871, reported in another thread to have derailed yesterday on the South Devon Railway?

    Re: 44871 derailment

A post by Ian Riley on the Works.

44871 did indeed have an 'Earth Fault', but subject to examination and inspection tomorrow, all should be well. The South Devon is a lovely Railway with some very friendly staff, and I wish them all the best.

Excellent, thanks. Clearly not as serious as the 43106 incident last year on the SVR.

Thanks, did look at the SDR website before starting this thread, there was nothing on their website at that time.

Lets hope the loco's tender wheelset is undamaged. The loco has work to do later in the week!

I also looked on both of SDR's websites and also the unofficial site and there was nothing regarding this minor incident on there either, lets hope all will be well now and I personally look forward to both loco's tackling Lickey incline.

Hi. First time I've posted here, but I was on the train when 44871 derailed its tender. I was leaning out of the fifth (and last) carriage of the train as we slowed for the crossing and saw 44871's tender appear to lurch a bit, and then immediately the brakes went on hard. It wasn't at all alarming, but it was obvious something had happened, especially when 44871's crew got down and started examining the tender.

I took this a few minutes afterwards. Not a brilliant picture as I only had a mobile phone with me, but might be of interest.

Up to that point the SDR's gala seemed to be going very well, and it's a shame that this little mishap disrupted the last day. From my point of view as a visitor, though, I still thoroughly enjoyed the gala and, as a bit of a fan of Oliver Cromwell I must admit that I was secretly pleased that it got the chance to haul the train back alone. Not having travelled behind it before the power was very impressive, as was the sound when the driver (who gave every impression he was enjoying himself) gave it the beans up the bank to Buckfastleigh!
