Brilliant idea, though it would take Tyseley some time to bin all that useless cladding, obscure valve gear and blastpipe, convert to right hand drive, and order all the copper & brass fittings

Something that looks like a cross between a 33 and a steam loco no thank you!!
Don't forget this is a celebration of all things GWR.
But please don't forget that this is taking place on today's modern railway, so don't expect a record breaking run.
All we are trying to do is recreate as far as possible the experience of the steam hauled Bristolian.

Great idea to use a Bulleid, providing the leaking oil bath doesn't set the lagging on fire, that part of the miniature valve motion doesn't bend, that one of the coupled wheels doesn't come off, or that they can get the reverser to stay in the right place preferably in forward gear (all Bulleid pacific traits I beleive). Hopefully there will not be a heat wave, to avoid the crew suffering from the heat in the enclosed cab, and that the limited coal capacity in the bunker manages to last out the trip doing all this supposed work. It appears that 5043 managed to do the 290 mile return trip to Salisbury last Saturday on a tenderful of coal without re-fuelling. Try doing that with Tangmere without stopping for coal twice!

Nice to read that 'big four' and/or 'inter-region' friendly rivalry is alive and kicking!

Lancaster could drop water bombs! Talking on aircraft what about the flying boats used for fighting forest fires. Cruising speed should be low enough to run in synch with 5043 and could dispense its load onto an adapted tender top to funnel water into the tender. Have to ensure 5043s cab is monsoon proof. On the upside might give the impression water troughs were being used!

Joking aside be good to see what is actually deployed.

    Regards
    Duncan

I can reveal that the water carrier for The Bristolian has a mainline test run today behind 5029 and is now at Southall awaiting 5043.

    See here ... http://david1984.fotopic.net/p64085290.html

Ignore the bit about the 37 being on its way to Swanage - that's just misinformation from Tyseley - the 37 has actually had its engine replaced with a 3000 gallon water tank. Note that the bodyside is plain blue - no BR logo or number - the plan is to apply a full height GWR roundel and a brass number plate in GWR-style bearing the number 175, albeit with much larger digits.

I hope the linesiders will approve!

Fit the condensing apparatus as used on the panniers that went on the underground so the water can be re-used, saves all that extra weight of hauling a converted 37 around......

has anyone thought of using a helecopter ? it could pace the engine and if the coal space has a shield over it leading into the filler all the chopper has to do is to match the speed of the engine and drop the large bore hose

Wethel it is or Wethel it isn't, I still think 35028 would do a good job at pushing a plodding Castle along. Its been on Western metals so many times of late its probably a naturalised citizen...

I believe a helicopter was mentioned somewhere in the thread though it may take some finding.. still may need someone to align it on the tender. Have someone parachute onto 5043s tender:shocked:

Could go land based with green (GWR lined) goddesses running along a road parallel to the track firing the water straight into the tender

Personally I like the :plane: idea.

Back to reality the 37 idea sounds more sensible.

What about borrowing the swing-arm from a water tower and fitting it to a bells & two-tones tanker then put it on a flatbed wagon and arrange for a wrong-line possession of the up line, then have it run alongside while the water transfer takes place. A kind of land-based mid-air refuelling! (never mind bridges and other potential obstructions, or FGW having to cancel a string of services!)

Alternatively, you can hire inflatable water troughs from here: http://www.andyscastles.co.uk/

    OK, Ive got it!!

As it's a GWR loco it pulls 25"Hg of vac, but all normal locos only need 21", so you've got 4" going spare, right? So use the spare 4" to draw water, via a water separator over the tender and a hose-reel in the train. The tender will be topped up using the posh class passengers' supplies of Peckham Spring water. And if that's not enough, then it's down the train further to snaffle any spare ale! Iain

If I was on the train I would rather stop than use ale, use lager instead.....
