There's a whole thread there, isn't there? What is "preservation"? No doubt there are almost as many opinions as there are railway enthusiasts! My point-of-view is that we are continuing a tradition and adding to railway history as we do. We start with how it was done in the old days, and we aim to preserve that tradition and hand it on to the next generation, but we adapt and update as necessary and as we see fit, just as previous generations did. The debate will always be about how, and how much, to adapt and update.

There is as much history to the early days of the preservation movement (when I was a boy) as there is to the last days of BR steam. The recent discussions of T9 120 or Black Five 44932 are good examples of this, and we will see it brought to the fore in the next year or so as the Bluebell, Middleton and, of course, Talyllyn celebrate significant anniversaries. The history of steam didn't stop when the last fires were dropped in August 1968, nor when the last NCB Austerity was sold. Thank goodness, and the preservation pioneers, for that!

It's not quite so impressive as necessary. At my age it either goes to the taxman as Inheritance Tax or goes to the kids as Inheritance. On the basis that I earned it I'm taking first option on spending it and let the kids and the Government fight over the remains when I'm gone done and dusted.

Well at that distance and very head on I don't think it's fair to say that the loco doesn't show up well in black. In fact I'd say that the colour of the loco has picked up better than the support coach.
I certainly don't think dark green would have made any difference to the shot in those conditions imo.

However I don't think you can call 62mm (exif data) a "long telephoto", so maybe you could have zoomed in a little bit more and cut out some more of the haze.

I was merely making a suggestion regarding the hazy conditions, heaven forbid I should suggest you compromise your artistic style for the sake of a better shot!

Perhaps you might like to provide a link to your work so I don't make any sweeping assumptions.

Unfortunately and very annoyingly 6233 produced no smoke whatsoever when she arrived through Abergele & Pensarn. She sounded great on the approach, but it is just one of those things so wont get too worked up about it. Would have looked nice though:(

What you prefer is your choice and you are entitled to it, personal taste is just that, personal.

If that's your preference then you might ask 19D.3326 to share his work with this forum in future, as a lot of others do with videos and photos.

Do these members who are complaining about the fact that the black duchess makes a poor shot never take photos of any other locos that run in black?
