I'm lead to believe the Thornby ones are heavily robbed whilst "in store" and paint is paint, not a reason to preserve something.

Thinking more about spares side than whole locomotives if the sanding equipment hasn't been removed whilst in store some of the locomotives in store may (if still required) provide the bits needed for ngg 16 sanding gear.

£175 per ton ! ouch.. thats nearly double this time last year !

My guess is the 2nd life of these 56's will be girders in a Chinese block of flats.

09/0s are much more suitable for preserved railways than the regeared 08s (09/1s and 09/2s). The purpose built 09/0s have bigger axleboxes so are more suitable for running longer distances.

... or surrounding baked beans in Tescos (other retail outlet-type potential homes for recycled class 56s are also available)

Does anyone know what sort of condition(if any) the 09/0s are in? Are they all heavily 'stored' or are any complete and half reasonable?

A row of rather sorry looking 56's has appeared in Doncaster Belmont over the last few days. Couldn't see which ones, but are they anything to do with this?

    According to www.wnxx.com, they are 56041, '53, '55, '72, '93, '99, '110 and '119 and are all indeed on this tender list.

Ok - so my choice is either a new car - or an 09! So (without sarcasm please)

    - How much to buy?
    - How much to get into running condition?
    - What condition are the following in?

    09003 Margam
    09008 Bescot Yard
    09010 Hither Green
    09012 Hither Green
    09016 St Blazey
    09018 Hither Green

i would suggest joining wnxx and asking there, there are a few people on there who would have a reasonable idea of the state of these things.

You will be in competition against the main Scrap yards such as CF Booths, EMR etc and of course other private bidders. Getting an realistic estimation on the loco in question based on current scrap prices per tonne x weight and also an extra provision of a few k to be kept for transport.

An extra provision for spare parts and maintenance should also be kept to get the loco into running condition, not forgetting extra for Storage/Siding costs on the railway where it will be kept.

A rough estimated figure would be anywhere from £20-30k easily and thats for a 08/09 in a reasonable state with little work needed to be carried out. However, these days its rare to find!
