So there are those who struggle to get a good picture of a clean and shiny black loco, well I'm sorry but I'm sure that the majority of enthusiasts and joe public would prefer to see and travel behind the clean loco, rather than the filthy ones we were used to in the 60's. And of course it's joe public and the travellers who provide for the locos upkeep.

If I could be persuaded to pay for the privilege of posting photos - which I won't on principle - I would put up the rather impressive scan I did last night of 46229 in green on the ELR in 1997 - a market response to a paid for need which provided a sight not seen since 1964, and one which it seems the livery nazis are going to see us in our boxes before they release again.

As for all this puerile trading of insults - the weather in the afternoon in North Wales was somewhat different than that in the morning, and the results show that. Anyone who knows and appreciates how to deal with light knows that.

When we painted the Scot black in September 1969 she looked wonderful, but we also found out that it is a bxggxr to keep smart, and on something with the mass of the Duchess, it showed after the run to Holyhead alone. The Blackbird has to be polished before every display, and was washed twice during the GBIII run to keep it smart - Black is black and needs considerable work to keep it presentable

Cromwell, in brunswick green, a colour tolerant of more relaxed regime with the polishing rags, looked nicely run in by the time it reached Inverness last month - just cast your mind back to how 5407 looks after a return from the West Highland, and big, or small, dirty black is always dirty black

When I am a paying customer I don't give a hoot about liveries - its the noise and experience that matters. When I am watching if it ain't right, I haven't suddenly lost the capacity or ability to comment, or - it appears - to set some considerable hares running.

    Happy scribing chaps!

Fine photos by Willig - especially the ones around Conwy. Both he and the late great Eric Treacy seem to have little difficulty making striking images of the LMS 1946 express livery.

As the OP I believe this thread has reached the end of its useful life!

Agreed, but just in case anyone has more useful comments it will be left open for a while longer, but, one more unnecessary photography post and it will be closed.
