Thanks 73129, I just found this one as well!

The only other information I have found on it is that it was originally at Cannon Street before being moved to Hither Green. Not sure if it is a 65 or 70 footer.

My very unscientific measurement (Using Google's key at 50' scale would suggest this is 65' not 70') but i'll leave it to the experts..
Of those around London it looks in the better condition.

Really? Didn't they rip out their 2nd turntable a few years ago?

Is it true that the MHR have put their turntable(ex Bricklayers Arms), up for sale?

If so, it is a shame. I would have thought that in the medium term, it could be installed at Ropley in the area near to where it is stored.

Once Ropley Manor is dismantled, would it not be possible to run a track embedded in concrete along the side path of Ropley shed, possibly from the new spur put in for the new C&W works.

Then during special events, demonstrations could be held by temporarily closing access to Ropley Yard, to allow the loco to run through and be turned.

I know that it would not bring in revenue as such, and also that the requirement for a turntable is limited.

But in my opinion having observed similar installations in action at Tyseley, Yeovil and Minehead, the MHR could be missing a trick, all attract a healthy level of observers and add to the visitor experience.

    The Scarborough turntable.
Where did it come from originally?

The turntable was originally located at Gateshead and when moved to Scarborough was extended from 60ft to 70ft.

Believe the Heaton turntable is still available, certainly has been used in recent years for turning visiting steam locos.

The turntable is still there and available for use. If you search for Heaton on Googlemaps and change the output to satellite the turntable is clearly visible to the lower left of the main depot building. Enlarging the image shows it to be in quite good condition.

    Hi Frank,

I thought that you might have realised by now that some of us might be of the shy, retiring type!

Now that makes three posts, see what you mean about it being habit forming.

If you search on Multimap you can get a "Bird's Eye" view [i.e. aircraft photographic survey] which you might find are clearer than satellite views.

    Thanks Peter.

  16. Despite the control label, when you zoom in, the images in Great Britain on Google Maps/Earth are from aerial (not satellite) surveys, as are the multimap images. However, the "bird's eye" images on multimap do give an excellent view - in Heaton at least. Thanks, Peter, for the suggestion.

The Mid Hants ex Bricklayers Arms turntable has now been exchanged for BR Std 4 Tank 80150 currently stored at the former EWS depot in Barry.

Yes, thanks. I know now. It was coincidental that 3 days after posting my message. Colin Chambers and Bob Allen of the MHR were at Barry to hear that the swap with the turntable was a done deal.

Still a shame that the MHR could not accomodate the turntable, however a 4MT standard tank is more than a good swap.

Can anyone remeber how long the second or "new" turntable was at Nine Elms?
