    Hi everyone looking on the MHR web site I see there is an update about LSWR dining car No. 7851 which has now entered C&W workshop for restoration. Can anyone tell me if there are any other LSWR dining cars in preservation?

    Before you worry, this is me talking.

    I believe swanage has an LSWR ironclad, dont know how similar this is.

    Talking to the carpenter at MHR who i work with, a lot of the timberwork is rotten. Lots of work to do. Our carriage shop is getting quite busy with 2 coaches, a class 11 and a u boat tender.

    The coach is now stripped down to its bare frames, all doors and panelling removed.

    This is the only LSWR Restaurant Third to survive & is a unique and very important coach. It was however built for the SR in 1923 as a continuation of a previous LSWR order.
    There are two LSWR Restaurant Composite's at the P&BR. One is in very poor order I think. There is also a LSWR Dining Saloon at MOD Bicester.

    Not Dining cars as such Lee, however there are I think around 9 LSWR coaches in preservation of which 2 tourist opens thirds and 2 semi open brake thirds are restorable. Steve Best would be the ideal man for this information.

    Maybe the beginning of a vintage train perhaps?

    This is a complete list of LSWR Passenger rated coaches I'm aware of. There will be other bodies inside bungalows I haven't established a definate origin. There are over 200 bodies in West Sussex of which some are no doubt LSWR.

    Yes I am an active volunteer
    Good luck and well done to the team who have taken this unique vehicle on. The images indicate there is a long journey to return this coach to service - but I'm sure it'll be far more interesting than just another mk1 rebuild when it's finished.

    Yes it is good to see restoration work start on this vehicle. One of the members of the Mid-Hants Wagon Group, Ian Johnson has , has offered his services to this project. With 25 years of experiance in vintage carriage restoration both at the Bluebell and Didcot, Ian,s expertise will make this vehicle one of the best in preservation.

    What are the current status' of LSWR No. 1353 and SR No. 4367? The Vintage Carriage Survey seems to indicate the Ironclad is stored and the Bulleid is undergoing a long term re-build (given the mods to the brake end I don't think it can be classed as a basic restoration!). Is this the case?

    All vehicles are owned by the Vintage Carriage Group. As you are proberbly aware 7851 is being funded by the HLF and the next vehicle to be restored reapaired will be the operational Bullied, (now looking tired), followed by 4367. I understand that the funding will come from Mid-Hants LTD for the last two. 1353 is thinking too far ahead at the present time.

    The Mid-Hants has always been well known for it,s engineering skills , but has always lacked the skills for C&W restoration which is now being addressed now that we have the undercover facilities under the leadership of John Wright who also works as a volunteer on our Black Five and drives mainline on "Bittern". The wagon group has given him our full co-operation and assistance , and gazing into my crystal ball I can foresee the two departments merging into one once we have enough Brake Vans and wagons operational.

    now mainine driving and black 5 work is something john wright has never told me about himself.

    He is great though, full of railway stories.

    Just make sure if you do pop down to work on the coach, bring your own chair if u want to stay in that messroom, the messroom is too overcrowded.
