I know many people don't like the Duchess in black, but I thought she looked great leaving Carnforth earlier today :)

Thank you John, despite liveries being such a sadly emotive subject, the Duchess looks fantastic in LMS black - and in my humble (and not employers) opinion, every bit as good as BR green, if not better. I understand the wanting locos in a livery that folk remember them, but people of my generation never knew them anyway - so any chance to see something in a different livery is welcome. We did 3717 for just the same reason - it was authentic and hadn't been seen for decades - and I can't wait to see it in the tin as it were. I hope to get the chance to enjoy 6233 in black too before her ticket runs out.

Well said Anthony, it's a pity that some people get so worked up about liveries. Why do they feel so important that only their opinion matters and what they can remember counts? While there are still some of us others around who do remember engines in that fine post-war LMS lined black livery, shouldn't we have a say too? One day the BR fraternity will be in a minority too but I trust the NRM will still aim to cater for all periods of rail history.

Nice pic squire. She does look good in black and a sensible headboard for a change.

    Excellent shot John :).

Having seen 6233 in black myself yesterday for the first time, I think it makes for a refreshing change. As someone who grew up in the post-steam era, I like to see the widest array of liveries possible and have no particular leaning towards those of BR. Whilst I do prefer 6233 in maroon, I'll be very thankful when I look back at photographs/videos in years to come and see this variation.

Thankyou :) IMHO, from a photography point of view, all the darker liveries look much better in bright sunlight. I was lucky with the sun strength/position and the fact that she was working well :)

Nice shot John, hope you did not get too inundated with updates.... I was sending to 10 people most of the time.
Whilst on the subject of black, was there any special reason for going black originally whenever it was?

There have been a few photographers complaining about the black not being easy to photograph, yet as seen in this thread others have managed to get excellent ones, could it be a case of blaming the colour for the fact they were unable to get a good shot, when it might be their lack of ability... or am I asking for trouble. :peep:

Shiny black locos can be difficult to get a decent pic of under certain circumstances, especially if you are using slide film. Much easier with digital as you can play around with "curves," "levels" and "shadows and highlights" to bring the best out of the image.

As she passed me at Euxton on the evening run the MK one eyeball noted that she was looking just as dusty as on the North Wales coast last month. A quick tweak of photoshop and she is as black as Cherry Blossom, and the coaches all maroon. But with an evening glint like that above she could be any colour.

I have just finished scanning over 100 shots of Duchesses in all their incarnations and all their liveries, and I know which I would like to see for real. It appears that only Mark Allat and Co know how to play that tune - and very well they do it too as their financial results this year show.

Brunswick Green this winter - then apple green again - then into blue. Everyone gets a turn and they get all the kudos, turnover and publicity.

I wonder if we'll see it at Carnforth after the painters have done their work?

Lovely photo Phil, the sun certainly brings out the loco in black. Phil probably had the same overcast conditions as I had further south in the morning which does the livery no favours.

    Record shot here from Golborne.

I would upload the video but I have not re-installed a video editor since my recent PC problems.
