From what I remember, the owning organisation was setting up a fund for the new right cylinder whilst they continued to restore their 'Black Five', 45293. However, it seems to have fallen by the wayside in terms of newsworthiness. I'm glad that there are finally a few more serious MN restorations emerging. They may be too powerful for everyday heritage-line use, but they do seem to succeed in capturing the imagination...

Strangely the fund wasn't for a new cylinder, it was for the current one to be repaired.

Is it really wise to get it repaired when in theory it will always be weaker than an undamaged cylinder?

Not sure what the price difference is with a new cylinder though.

Ashame they can't buy a cylinder from one of the other non running MN. Could be one way of getting around the broken cylinder problem.

Are there any other non-working MN's that have been confirmed to have no potential future? I know it's been rumoured about 35022, but I don't recall seeing it for definite.

A cylinder's not exactly the sort of thing you flog if there's any prospect it might come in handy!

Which cylinder on 35029 is sectioned? If the complete one is the one required couldn't they do a swap & cover 35010's broken one with cladding.

35029's right-hand cylinder has been sectioned, putting a bit of a dampener on that idea.

I suppose this is one of those 'wouldn't it be nice if...' moments. From reading through the BESPS site, there are no longer any patterns in existence to recast a MN cylinder. However, there'll come a time when others will need replacing. Out of interest, what sort of prices would you be looking at to produce a wooden pattern?

I know the dimensions maybe a bit different, but hasn't 34027 had a new cylinder made? Don't know if that pattern could adapted. There again I don't know if it is the correct side.

That's why I said it had only been rumoured, I've been proved wrong too many times to write anything off...!

To get a rough price maybe someone on here knows what the MHR paid for their cylinder pattern for 73096.

    Not a lot!

Just stored at South Coast Steam, Portland, with little if anything done to it.

In fact seeing it last year and comparing it to when it left the MHR it is visibly deteriorating, out in the open.

    Such a shame.

I think you have missed understood what I was asking. Someone paid for a new cylinder pattern be it the insurance company or a second party. So someone will know the cost of a new cylinder pattern for a BR Standard Class 5 loco. From this you could work out a rough price for a MN cylinder pattern.

If you look at the 72010 Hengist website, the quote they have for a pair of cylinders is £50,000 for patterns, casting and machining.

So it would probably not be unreasonable to expect to spend £25-30,000 for a single cylinder.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Your right it is a shame when locos are left to rot outdoors.

Taw Valley's new cylinder casting is slightly smaller than an MN's. Any costings available for that?
