    quickie update;

Tims been working as have others on the LMS Brake van and its looking lovely, all painted up and lined out ,just a little bit to finish off round the door ends, the springs have also been worked upon

the old pond area at Rowsley has been filled in and seeded,a much more useful and better looking area now.

the class 50 lads were hard at it too dodging the weather as we all were, the class 47 is having electircial work and battery work undertaken.

Rob and the volunteers have been hard at work on various sites from one end of the line to the other, this week.

The signalbox windows are now three quarter reglazed, with a mass effort fromPete Waller,David Dyson and myself, were back on track again, next week will have to be for other jobs as the main event will be the turntable and 48624 event,Dont forget all!!!!

think we all hid from the rain at some point today then baked in the sunshine ,mad weather!!

Il leave any news on Matlock for Tom to ammend via the official press statements as till theres a big job on theres nowt to really report till then save small bits of news, so il try and report more on what the volunteers have been doing instead on individual waggons, locos etc as weve been a bit thin on that so far in the news.

Yes I am an active volunteer
Spent the day with Dom working on Matlock box.
By 10 30 the car park at Rowsley was full from the station to the main gates.
All the trains seemed well loaded as they passed us.
The evening freight train left as we were packing up, it had a good mix of wagons and
    was a decent length.
We had a few folk come down to have a look at the box during the day.
The box is starting to look good now with three sides done and the front well on the way.
If you are down at Rowsley in the next few weeks do pop down and have a look at it.

to add to petes bit, on the sunday I then went and removed the last of the putty from the second out of the front windows, then thought i know! il check that little bit of rot out on the sill we spotted previously, next thing i had the front windows out completely ready to remove the window sill next week!masochist comes to mind!

i did learn from this excersise thst the windows were sealed up around 1972 as there was a copy of the sunday mirror dated as such inside the window gap which had then been puttied in place (probably to prevent draughts) this is the likely reason that the window runner had rusted away and then let the rot into the space at the end, we could repair this but id prefer completely to remove it and make a new one up,i already have the runners in situ.

the windows out, these then got fully repainted and put back inside for glazing next week and the window holes boarded up again, i also finisehed filling in the holes on the top sills and beading in the end windows frame from last week

    HST

had a chat with the guys today, theyre cracking on with many different projects, theyre shed which theyre looking at working on the next stage (the doors ) when the time and money becomes available, theyre also working on the 03 and the 14 with various little niggly bits to sort out ,there was a full crew today as it was also the deisel gala so the lads were showing visitors around their works.

noted the Class 50 lads were around too.

Rob,Malcolm and Tom were all working on the named bricks for Rowsley Shed, good job today was a nicer day than yesterday as Malcolm was mixing up cement,so at least it can dry now.

    S&t

David was working on the telephones and Jim was having a day off working on the freight train in the gala, I had assistance from both mr Dyson and the LMSCA lads in making the new sill up for the window in the ex luffenham signalbox, this was fitted by saturday and on sunday Pete and myself set about repairing the damaged windows (spread with the metal runner rsuting away),new rollers have now been made up to fit and the window frames repaired, the first coats of paint on the new window sill have been completed and we can get on with fitting the wheels, runners and getting the glazing finished on the last four of the windows over the coming weeks.

    Garden and lineside

Peter,Ian and others have been busy clearing and cutting the undergrowth lineside and the whole of Rowsley certainly looks much better with a nice green mowed carpet, the lineside too.

    Deisel gala

Looked good, the service was certainly intensive with one passenger and one freight (including the ballast rake and the lms rake of tim`s and ben`s) and , the passenger train and the freight kept rotating locomotives and the two train running was in operation and at least on sunday the weather cetainly came out, well done too all, looked good from our vantage spot by the box!

    the following from the peakrail enthusiasts forum;

The board of Directors of Peak Rail plc has tonight (Wednesday 12th May 2010)
received a formal request from the General Manager of the East Lancashire

contract ends with Peak Rail plc on Monday 31st May 2010.

The board of directors of Peak Rail plc are delighted to be able to assist the
East Lancashire Railway in their request and the locomotive is set for a
possible departure to pastures new (providing transport is available) on Monday
    17th May 2010.

    Carriage and waggon

Tony and Colin were continuing to work on the corridor coach doors, while the eathers nice.

    Class 50

the lads were busy working on the spare engine in the shady side of repulse with a very big torque wrench, attacking the tops of the piston heads-theyd like to lift the engine when finances get bigger, come on support a good cause see their website pages for more details.

    Delacher vans

John has i will say done a marvellous and absolutely thorough job on the first of the two ex ferry vans, i watched him spend most of today taking the paint of the trailing axle till it was shiny bear metal, hes almost three quarters of the way through the van now.

Narrow gauge was up and running and there was a small disply from a battle recreation group whod set up camp in rowsley wood.

    S&t

sheltering from the sun, the front windows are refitted and the beading and surrounds have been refitted again, some minor fettling and repainting still to do.

the signal posts for matlock have been repainted, theyl need spinning over and repainting again but itl be a couple of weeks as other jobs are more pressing first, in the heat i managed to get three coats of paint on each post as the previous had dried before i even got to finish it

    s&t

This weekend we started on the semaphore signals fitting out for the derwent end of Riverside when we put them in place, the fittings had previously been fettled up in my shed and given a coat of paint or two a week or two back, but we still needed to raid the stores at Rowsley for the odd bracket or two as usual when putting second hand items back together again you never find all the bits to start with.

there are three semaphores a double and two single armed versions, all will be upper quadrant in nature and will try to use the non standard posts and fittings where possible to make good use of the items weve had in store for years, the more standard clamp around parts will be used for the single posts ,all will be laddered with anti climb boards which for a change will be metal and hinged to the ladders for better security.

We were planning to get some more windows done on the box too but by the time wed completed two of the posts to a stage where some repainting will be needed to tidy up where weve scraped it here n there wed run out of time, im down friday for a few hours so will do that then.

saw the heritage shunters trust lads about and the lmsca were working away too, Harv says hes been working on the class 14,the steelwork for the H.S.T shed doors has been progressing well.

    thats all for now folks!
