A great day apart from the afternoon shot at Birkett Common which was spoiled by a rather annoying cloud and not enough wind to push it aside. Apart from that a rather enthusiastic crew. I've uploaded the shot from Birkett Common but other shots include Ribblehead in the morning and Goosemere Height near Hellifield will be on the Part 3 DVD.

A lovely day in the fells yesterday, i saw in the evning at Angerhome before spending the night in Dent. One downside to the run yesterday was lineside fires, one was at Ais Gill and another between Dent station and Arten Gill. At the latter the Sedburgh fire engine attended at 7.oopm

Anyone know who was driving/firing for this run? They weren't messing about, although the southbound timings didn't leave much margin for error with a service train following hot on the heels after Appleby.

For those interested in the finer detail of this trip the start to stop time from Lancaster to Preston on the outward leg was 28mins 57 secs with some exceptional running between these two cities. The northbound climb of the Long Drag was better than many a pacific I have travelled behind with speeds in the 30’s to Ribblehead and then 28 mph into Blea Moor tunnel. The passing time between Settle Jn and Blea Moor southern portal was 25mins 27secs. Ais Gill summit was passed at 50mph from where the locomotive was carefully controlled to around its line speed. The return journey was 14mins late departing Carlisle because of a lack of platform space but suffice to say by the first set down stop at Long Preston the train was back on time. The climb from Appleby to Ais Gill was varied with speed down to 26mph in the Griseburn area but accelerated up the final lengths from 31mph crossing Ais Gill viaduct to 36mph passing the summit board. The time taken from a standing start at Appleby to passing the summit was 35mins 16 secs. No records here but very commendable for an 8F. The return run from Preston to Lancaster, start to stop, took 28mins 19secs again with some good sustained running at or slightly above the locos max permitted line speed of 50mph.

Thanks 6:05, always interesting to hear how the loco performed on the tour. If you're linesiding then you only get a snippet of how it went.

I am constantly amazed at the response the 8F gets from many 'enthusiasts'. One I saw at Armathwaite was expecting 46115 and when it wasn't said to me "I won't bother with it this afternoon". Having already travelled to see it, and on such a glorious day, I was somewhat stunned by this comment. It's steam on the S&C in 2010!!!

It is also something of an enigma to me why some "enthusiasts" have a "downer" on the 8F. It is a good powerful loco that never fails to perform well and is as much at home on the S&C as the Jubilee and the Scot. I would like to have seen it on this years "Welsh Mountaineer" series to see how it performed on the climb to Blaenau Ffestiniog but it looks like Black 5's are again going to be used on these.
