Does any one know what the problem with Tangmere is, why she has not reappeared from Carnforth this spring. So many tours cancelled or postponed due to her being unavailable.

i should imagine that with all the other work Carnforth has had to do on the rest of its fleet, that work on Tangmere has slipped nothing to wrorry about there, it will be done when its done ,

There was a piece in HR last month, boiler requires some welding to cracks and replacement stays.

I was told by a WCRC representative on the 'Southern Irishman' that most of the cracks were at the bottom end of 34067's firebox. Hopefully she'll return with a new coat of paint!

    Here I go.

I'm sure the new paint will help performance and reliability.

That's a very contentious post. I hope that you can substantiate your comments or are they based on ill-informed mess room gossip?

That is a rather serious allegation regarding the middle cylinder maintenance and boiler damage LN850. I would strongly advise you think about it further.

I hope this is'nt going to turn into another slanging match about maintenance practices and thinking what went wrong without it being backed up by the people who own and look after 34067, nothing can be backed up correctly just by what you read in a railway book.

LN850 - You do not work for WCR and I'm not aware that you are or ever have been part of 34067's maintenance crew; I suggest you keep second-hand snippets of messroom twaddle to yourself.

James to stop all this speculation prehaps you could advise on what is the current state of play with this loco and when we might see this fine engine working again.

LN850 Please think before posting Hearing that you "heard" the maintanence has been rubbish does lead me to the conclusion that this post is based on no facts just hear say. Given what happened recently I ask you think of the impact and implications of what you post.

Afraid I'm not really going to add much to the more sensible comments, posted so far. 34067 came to Carnforth, in January, for annual maintenance, most of which has been, as expected, boiler work (no surprises found). The urgent repairs to 46115, plus the need to finish off 48151 and 44932, has, indeed, meant timescales have slipped, although it is now 'all hands to', by Carnforth's small but excellent team, to get it back down south, asap.

As twr12 rightly says, the repaint would, of course, be the most important factor, as newly-repainted steam locos don't fail - ever.

    Thanks James for the reply.

Looking forward to her return and a possible chance to see her on a test run or the LE move down south.

No such thing as a "middle chain drive" on a Bulleid. There are just two chains involved - one connecting the main sprocket on the crank axle to an intermediate sprocket and a second connecting this intermediate sprocket with that on the three throw jockey shaft. None of these chains are connected directly to any cylinder, they simply impart the rotary motion of the crank axle to the rest of the valve gear via the jockey shaft. As for bits breaking off the boiler....... What was the name of this "respected" railway book, "Thomas has cookery lesons?"

Sorry to see some slanging going on re this loco. But this is a loco that seems very hard to get information about, (well at least to me). Maybe J Shuttleworth, (sorry, that sounds dreadfully formal, but I don't know your first name), would be kind enough to post reports here from time to time as and when there is something worth saying.

I speak as someone who has photographed 34067 a lot since my return to UK steam in 2007, and as someone now who had started to travel behind the loco and wants to do a lot more of that. Preferably "down South".

Easy enough to wait and see when it re-appears I know. But I don't want to be booked away on my other hobby of dragging my ageing and overweight body up Welsh mountains when I would rather have been travelling behind an original condition Bulleid pacific.

    Regards,

    Bryan

Yep, it makes it go 10% faster! Nah, best to get the engine working again before thinking about repainting. It was just a minor gripe in that it was beginning to look tired and scruffy before withdrawal.

Not me, although I generally like locomotives to feature the last livery carried in pre-preservation service, as this tends to be the most historically accurate (unfortunately, this means that the vast majority would be in BR Brunswick or various shades of black!). Even so, I'm usually too happy to see anything in steam to care too much about livery. So long as it looks tidy and helps to market preservation, I'm game for anything (as long as no-one paints a Bulleid pink)...
