Good news from the Unofficial WHR Construction Site -

Paul Bradshaw: In the past few days the decision has been made by the FR and WHRCL to complete the works needed to obtain HMRI approval of the remaining section of the new WHR. By mid-September we need to have the section from Pont Croesor to Harbour Station brought up to the standard required for a passenger service. It is expected that with HMRI approval granted it will be possible to run occasional trains from Harbour Station over the WHR later this year and, it is hoped, a timetabled service over the winter.

    Yea, surely good news.

Perhaps it will be ready for my first full excursion on my birthday (12th September).

    Hurrah!

Porthmadog is commonly referred to as "Port", even by Welsh-speaking local residents. I've never heard anybody use "Porth" except, perhaps, with a silent "h".

Nage, ovbulleid - mae llawer iawn o lafariaid yn y Gymraeg - rydym yn defnyddiau llythrennau fel 'y'' ac 'w' fel llafariad!

Well, Andrew did say English or Welsh!!
[Translation: Welsh has lots of vowels - we use letters such as 'y' and 'w' as vowels]
In fact north Welsh has more vowels than English: something like 26 vowel phonemes to the 21 of southern England standard English
(Email me privately if you want to know what we mean by phonemes!)

In the same way, we refer to Machynlleth as "Mach", with a silent "h".

I quite agree Felix - it annoys me when people say Welsh has no vowels - we have a lot!!
