Of course you could. You can overhaul a decent sized standard gauge engine for that amount.

How much did it cost the Corris to build their 'Tatoo'? Wasn't it about £120,000 roughly?

So is their plan somewhere in the public domain ? I am assuming that it is due to the amount of public money granted ? Presumably they will focus on Loco's that they might be able to use on their own line ?

1800 sq m is a big shed for narrow gauge so they should get a good few loco's in that.

Doubt it - the grant is for a restoration shed, not a museum/display shed. Maybe the museum will be built as part of the 10-year plan mentioned in the article.

Well, we know that the trust have restored the little wren and there is a thread on that somewhere on here. We also know that they are near to completing the restoration of ex Penrhyn Hunslet Margret, which has been ongoing since about 2000ish I would guess.

Lets hope that they restore some of the 2' loco's that will be able to run at many locations as they have some seriously historic stuff!

Personally I hope that they restore some of the 2' 6" stuff too! !

As for cost, I guess if you take the largest of the things they have, which will in all probability be completely trashed, require new boiler, cylinders, valves, pipework etc which won't have patterns or drawings I think you could rack up a serious ammount of cash doing all that if it was to be done to an as new standard.

The "new" hunslets retail at about £130k, which will have the pattern prices amortised over the ammount they think they can build / sell I would guess and they will get the benefit of some standard parts I would also guess. They are also relatively small in comparison to some of the loco's in the trust.

I am not saying that £350k is not a bit excessive, but I can see where the costs start to mount up!

how can a charitable trust educate the public by NOT allowing them access to tis collection? Imagine if the NRM did that!

Even if this topic was about building new locos, which it isn't, comparing the cost of building a Quarry Hunslet with an L&B Manning Wardle is a bit ingenuous.
