IMHO THE s160 is a nasty brutish ugly peice of machinery which hopefully will see a new lease of life on preserved railways, especially at christmas when they can masquerade as Polar Expresses, get them headlights fitted chaps... Given their Worldwide distribution and historical significance it strikes ne as odd that there isnt a ready to Run Model of these grunts.

I'm pretty sure they weren't designed with aesthetic beauty in mind. I think they're wonderfully imposing though.

S160 for me is like an Mussle car, its all about power, shouting out, in your face. You could never say they were a thing of beauty but they have something about them you can't put your finger on.

We should have two back in action in a few years, I believe churnet Railways has one not that far of and KWVR has one in the pipe line for around 2012.

How many are in the UK these days - Is it 6? #
Not the nicest looking of engines but certainly not the worst - just look at those class 70's no wonder they got their nick name because they are ugly! When you consider 2120 of the S160's were built in 4 years I doubt looks was a worry - Unfortunately the class 70 cant use that excuse!!!

the S160 certainly wont win any beauty contests, but they were designed to be fuctional and they generally were, they are defo loud and brutish and when fitted with the american chime that 701 had at first, you know what was approaching before you saw it , not one of the most comfortable riding engines going either but on a good day, it was an experience to fire ,if you had a driver who liked to give it a go, its all sheer noise and brute power and that chime echoing off the cuttings

the only model you can get that I know of is the DJH one but at £305 quid for a kit is rather too expensive for most

The lack of an RTR model may be something to do with them never carrying BR livery ;)

  11. S160s are all about power and getting the job done not looks after all no good having a "pretty" loco if it cant do the job that these needed to do on often lightly laid and damaged track

i can vouch for that, even when it was lightly loaded 701 sounded like it was working hard , but it was very rough riding, you got shook all over the place at least thats my excuse for when i missed the firehole ,in the earlier days some crews couldnt make it steam, but i must say, i seemed to do well on it some times i even had the genny and lights going to use up steam to try to stop it blowing its head off against the injector but then i did tend to be a bit heavy handed some times

I remember a good few years ago (either the late '80s or early '90s), when the KWVR's No. 5820 had a problem with its whistle valve, which stuck wide open. The locomotive was parked up in Mytholmes Tunnel I believe, with the fire dropped so the pressure dropped enough to allow the whistle to be taken off. I read in Push & Pull that the residents of the valley thought the noise was to warn them of imminent nuclear attack from Russia. I kid you not!

I well remember it in service though, and it was a beast. That nathan chime whistle used to scare the crap out of me as a kid stood on the platform end at Haworth! It was always sure-footed though, unlike 5197. I suspect the rgulator linkage had something to do with that though, as I believe 5820's was unmodified...

With respect 5197 was always sure footed in the right hands. 5197 didnt have sanders fitted during its visit to the KWVR - something that 5820 probably had.

6046 will return to traffic with working sanders.

    Regards

    Chris

Ah, I wasn't aware that sanders weren't fitted to 5197 Chris. I wasn't having a dig at 5197, by the way, just noticed the difficulties it was having on its visit to the KWVR, and I wasn't close enough to observe it in detail. It certainly looked and sounded a damn nice machine when I last visited the CVR though!
