Don't know about a fire near Frome on Saturday but there was a fire near Redruth on the diesel leg. I think the diesel was added at Taunton because the King had steaming problems.

Macko's picture is as near perfect as I've seen, but what really makes it magical (without detracting from it being a really good rail photo) is the two little kids that are bottom right. Often (understandably) photographers go to great lengths to avoid having stray people in the photo, but surely the sight of those two kids drinking in the sight, smell and sound of live mainline steam has to warm every enthusiasts heart, and gives us all hope that there will long be people willing to care for these machines.

Not doubting what you say as I have no reason whatever to, but I think possibly the reason being expressed for the doubt is that this is the first time a fire in this location on Saturday has been mentioned on any of the forums - including this one or other gen sites I watch most days - hope that may clarify why there has been some doubt about location of fire on Saturday DH

If think there has been a misunderstanding here. There may indeed have been a fire near Frome and it may have been caused by 6024, but, as I understand it, the diesel was attached at Taunton due to steaming problems with 6024, not because it had caused a fire. Also, as buseng says, there was a lineside fire in the Redruth area, but that could not be blamed on the steam locos as the tour was diesel-hauled on that section.

My clips from today can be found at:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35iKzm7iirs

Not overpleased with them, tried a couple of new locations but they didn't really work.
Cowley Bridge was a bit rushed, only just made it in time,
    hence the gallery in shot.

From the clag it looks like the Castle had the duff coal today.

Seemed to be some nasty flats on the trailing coaches,
(very noticeable in the second clip).

Considering Cowley Bridge cannot be more than a mile from St. Davids, I was amazed at the speed there.

Not meaning to be at all critical, but can any one tell me,
is the whistle on the King authentic.
To my limited knowledge it sounds more LMS/LNER than GWR.

I been thinking that for a while, seems to have a higher pitch than a usual GWR whistle.

No criticism taken; the King has two whistles, one high-pitched which is the one you'd expect from a GW loco, the other lower and throatier which I believe in steam days was an "emergency" whistle. Some crews these days prefer it.

I am not questioning anybody, I said I DON'T KNOW about a fire near Frome, Not that there wasn't one. I am 100% sure that the diesel was added at Taunton because the King had steaming problems though. The trouble on here is that because people work for or have close associations with a particular organisation, they are always in the right. It happens a lot when locomotives or heritage railways are being discussed. Dare anybody cross them!

PS Macko, your picture is fantastic, what's a 25 year wait when you get a result like that :)

Approaching West Drayton on Monday evening, running about half hour late. Frustratingly, if it had been less than 10 minutes late the sun was out. It would've been even better (from a photographic point of view) had it been an hour late, as there was a glorious patch of orange sun around 9pm. Oh well! The sound they were making more than made up for the poor lighting.
