It does make me smile at the mess room information that tends to find its way about the network , most of it ends up being nothing like the truth , except in a few cases what ever the cause, remember this, how long had tangmere been on the mainline, almost non stop? so she is bound to need work done to her occationally , it could well be that some work might have been postponed on previous trips to carnforth because she might have had to cover for a failed engine , so it could well have been that more work was needed, but thats not because of poor maintaince, more to do with stop that, she is needed back down south, we will do that next time, then with unexpected repairs to other engine the roumour mill goes into over drive , if the person in the know says its been nothing unexpected accept it,

I thought Taw Valley looked rather distinctive as the first Hogwarts Castle:

Well, I wasn't too displeased with 34027 as it wasn't pink. Also, if a 'Princess Coronation' or a 'Princess Royal' can have red and rebuilt 'Merchant Navy' locomotives come in blue, then why not? But Mr. Tiley, all I can exclaim to that photoshopped image is urghhhh! Anyway, back to the subject of the thread...

Don't forget the 3rd chain on a real Bulleid.
The bicycle chain than runs the oil pump!

Thank you especially JS for the update. It will be good to see her back down south as there is nothing like the chatter of a Bulleid at speed. Growing up in Exeter travelling to London always on the Southern (it was quicker) in the 50's and 60's with an Uncle who was in the Top Link at Exmouth Junction and regularly took me across the tracks to the shed I have a very soft spot for these beautiful and powerful Locomotives.

How a Bulleid Pacific should be seen at speed. Photo taken from behind fence on a public footpath so I was not trespassing before anyone asks. Thanks again for informed updates.

    Drool...................

Lovely photo. Can't wait to get behind her again.

And while on the subject of original Bulleids at speed, I shall never, ever forget the evening of 14th June 1967. "Boy", "The New Cross Lip", Gaffney, utterly thrashed a totally knackered 34102 "Lapford" up to 100 mph on the 18.35 Salisbury to Waterloo semi fast. Starting from Basingstoke with a fairly light 230 ton train, and we reached 100 approaching Fleet.

Noise was like an early Boeing 707, (they had very noisy engines), taking off at the end of runway 26 at Heathrow with an overload.

Rockets being thrown all over the place, and I have to assume the only reason half of Hampshire wasn't burned down that evening was because we must have had some rain in the recent past.

Wasn't on the footplate that night, more's the pity. But it was a daylight run and whilst it was common knowledge amongst the loco inspectors that us enthusiasts spent a lot of time on the footplates with the crews, there was a sort of unwritten rule not to be too blatant about it and do it in daylight. Well, all the best things in life seem to be done at night don't they! LOL!

how long before we see 35028 piloted by 34067 pulling out of penzance with the green train in tow, now thats got to be the best kind of revenge for allowing a castle on southern metals, you could always renumber tangmere for the day , what was the engine that ran the last br steam era train to or from penzance?

Does anyone know whether the amount of work done will allow 34067 to be recertified or will she run until the end of her current ticket and then be fully overhauled?

She must be getting close to the end of her current ticket? She has been off the mainline for a few months now; so surely it will mean a full overhaul now? I unfortunately don't know what the plan is. I just see that this would make more sense as in overhauling the loco now while she is out awaiting repairs?

That is what I was thinking. But the end of her ticket may be further away than we thought. We never did find out how long the extension was.
