Thank you for your response to my post Bryan, it's good to know that although we come from opposite sides of the argument we can still see the funny side.
Although I must admit to pausing for a nano second before posting those two song titles.!!!!

One thing I've learned over the years Kevin, is to hang onto a sense of humour at all costs.

Can all you selfish people demanding rain pack it in please! Given the date this weekend, if there's anything but clear blue skies beside a certain part of the M11 between Cambridge and Royston this weekend I shall be far from happy! ;)

and for those who don't know what I'm on about watch this

I'm normally not into air craft, but that looks like one heck of a great day out. Pity I'm working this weekend.

OK. We will arrange for our song dance to be South of Duxford!

    Enjoy.

On a smaller scale I still remember the West Malling Shows we used to have here. Got a cockpit ride in G-AMPO, (I think it was that DC-3), and had to hang on to the back of the pilots seat as he "beat up" the airfield in a very low pass! Wonderful stuff.

And somewhere I have some cockpit shots I took on board DC-6 HB-IBS circa 5000 feet above Norwich.

A classic and arguably the best Kinks number of all time IMHO.

G-AMPO is indeed a DC-3. Great fun to fly in.
You cabbed a DC-6? Making me jealous now.

Some years ago I did a video of some "borrowed" footage of high speed Bulleids in 1967 with the Kinks' Waterloo Sunset playing over the top. When I showed my Father it brought a lump to his throat. Sadly the machine I used died and I can't find the video. The song and the footage worked very well together though. Sorry, went a bit off topic there.

Just checked my notes and it was either AMPO or AMSV I had the cab ride in! I'd need to check my photos to see which one.

I did have cab ride in AMPO on a scheduled flight as well. When it worked LHR - Humberside return via Norwich in 1981!

Going off topic...... Connection with fire risk...........Quick, quick...........

Oh yes! We could of course hire a slow flying Douglas DC-3, (Dakota), to fly over the affected area just to check the extent of fire risk on the exact route of proposed steam specials.

    Pheww.............

    B..ger. I thought I'd get caught. It's a fair cop gov!

Suppose you are splashing around up to your ankles in rain water up there, booking on steam trips with impunity. I do like the look of the one with doubleheaded black fives coming up soon. But such a lot of aggro to get up there to do it as I'm not doing any mountain trips to Snowdonia at present, (could have stopped near Manchester on the way). I go up mountains when it's cold, not under a hot b.ody sun!

To keep a railway angle, I flew from Coventry to Baldonnel (Dublin) and back once in a DC-3. Overflew the FR at about 2,000 ft and got a cracking aerial view of one of the Hunslets running across the Cob.

  18. KentYeti

    Which was going fastest?

    The Hunslet or the DC-3!

By the way, did you notice if there was there a fire risk on the FR that day? LOL!

We have had no rain for nearly a week, and that was a period of about 3 hours one night last week, before that nothing for several weeks, hosepipe on the garden nearly every evening as well, got to keep the veggies growing.
I'm on the Heart of Wales this weekend and Mr Riley says that his spark arresters work and it will be steam hauled, no question.

Water shortage - what bloody water shortage???

We had a horse nearly drown in a swamp today - three fire engines - three "incident Ambulances" one control unit, one fast response unit - firemen up to their waists in mud - pony owning girls didn't know whether to be concerned for the horse, or offer the firemen a rubdown!

Horse now out and doing well - fingers crossed! - girls on overnight vigil

Firemen no doubt off shift long ago and in the pub!
