Yeah, As quoted from the Bressingham Website: The ‘Elephant’ – currently under construction – an independent design based on the Kerr, Stuart ‘Wren’ class Locomotive design and with a new McEwen of Keighley boiler.

    Sounds good :)

It was started by the late Bevan Braithwaite OBE, and Bressingham are completing it - see pic here:

How about a Péchot-Bourdon? There are only two survivors - one in Serbia and one in Dresden - both 'stuffed'. Should be within BLodge capabilities and as it was a patented design, I should think that drawings are available somewhere. It would interesting to see a direct comparison with the 'original' Fairlies.
Failing that, a Leek & Manifold tank probably tops my list.

If the boiler copies the "Wren" design then it should be a free and economical steamer.

    So would I.
It apears that there is comparatively litle recorded apart from what appears on Susan Parker's site. It does not seem that very many were built although indications are that they performed well at the tasks for which they were used. Some very nice working models are shown on the web; pity none of them are full sized.

Having had my second turn with "Thomas Wicksteed" at Kew Bridge Steam Museum I am convinced that this is a most suitable design for a light narrow gauge loco. The boiler steams superbly with a particularly light consumption of fuel. This is true not only of its normal duties but also, so I am told, of its excursion to Wicksteed Park.

New builds to a successful design of which specimens still exist seem to be an excellent idea for any person or organisation with the resources. However I am not so sure when it comes to building either replicas of long defunct types or free lance designs. Hand made, as opposed to mass produced, machinery can vary dramatically in ability example to example. A below par example of a below par design would be a sad disappointment and tie up a lot of money!

Having said this, anyone contemplating building a small narroe gauge locomotive would be well advised to copy the "Wren" boiler design without alteration.

So, it looks like a new build Moel Tryfan may really be a possibility - still think Gowrie looked so much nicer and a new build Gowrie could no doubt fix the problems the original faced....
Any other recent NG new build projects actually started that members have heard of?

Well my choice of new build would be a 0-6-0 Beyer Peacock copy of the WLLR . They certainly could do with at least one more, not only do they look so good but they are most suited to that line. My last visit there was in May this year, I phoned the day before to see if one of the BPs were rostered to be working. I was told that there was. Got there the following day to find Joan was doing the duty, ok, I hadn't seen Joan working before and must admit wasn't overly impressed. On my way home a diesel was piloting the train out of Raven Square with Joan behind (presumably failed). The 0-6-0s Beyer Peacocks are so perfectly proportioned in my opinion.

My experience of the WLLR has been quite the opposite! I actually spent a brief period living in Welshpool last year, and sometimes dropped by Raven Square station when I had a free afternoon. In all my visits I only ever saw 822 or 823 running! I had to wait for the Autumn gala to finally get my ride behind Joan.

My vote would be for VoR No. 3 Rheidol, or perhaps one of the Cambeltown & Macrihanish locos.
