The first gala appearance of freshly overhauled Robert Stephenson 0-6-0T Twizell in a great line up of guest and resident locomotives will be a highlight of the fifth Legends of Industry steam gala weekend on the Tanfield Railway, September 11-12.

Home fleet set to include Austerity No. 49, Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST Renishaw Ironworks No. 6, Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns 0-4-0ST Sir Cecil A. Cochrane and Twizell.

    Guest locomotives... announcement coming soon!

Expect the usual really intensive timetable, model railway exhibition, demonstrations and huge array of other attractions on top of the spectacular sights and sounds that everyone has come to expect from Britain's most popular industrial railway gala.

Coal trains, mixed trains and passenger trains all tackling the fierce gradients in spectacular scenery.

Sounds very interesting......I shall have to see if I can get over there for a look-see! which will depend on how work is going on at the time.

Looking forward to finding out who'll be visiting.

(but I bet that it will not include the red Beamish Coffee Pot!):flypig: (better hide before anyone from Beamish sees that! although I am only joking....)

If you better this years score I owe you a pint, works both ways however...

You know your place Mr P&JR - a close second !.

PS When you rushed off to avoid seeing Dubsy move one of your number left half his tent on the field. I may use this as my "reason" to visit.

Well Glenalmond, on Nat Pres we may not quite have the following that the Foxfield gala does yet but in terms of visitor numbers we were some way ahead of yours last year... having said that I'll buy you a pint any time for having the balls to do the Dubs alone (and to apologise for having a railway to run on the Sunday so missing the first move).

But of course my friend, a good clean fight... we've won hands down on carriages already clearly though given the fact that you have resorted to advertising your passenger trains using an image of our carriages!

    That time of year already!!!
    lol

Lineside Clearance is under way, improving current spots and possible making some new ones.
The lineside from No.1 signal (Andrew house station) to Causey car park is been strimmed right back.
East Tanfield bank will be cleared right back, and the Framer hasn’t planted any crops near the track side in his fields, so nice clear shot on a classic location.
Also going to try and clear up the shot at the Causey Car park, so you can get a nice clearer shot.

So if anyone has any Suggestions on locations I'll see what I can do.

Did 69023 arrive at Tanfield yesterday?

Have unconfirmed reports that it did?

    Cheers

Well then the cat is most definitely out of the bag. J72 Class 0-6-0T No. 69023 arrived at Marley Hill yesterday ready to star at Legends of Industry V.

But what I hear you cry is a J72 doing at an industrial railway?

No. 69023 has been chosen as a visitor for a long list of reasons... not least of which include her past working on the Newcastle Quayside, certainly serving industry, AND we have two seperate reports that No. 69023 herself was on loan to the Springwell Bank Foot shed of the Bowes Railway in the 1964/1965 period (probably to cover for a broken Sentinel diesel). As yet we haven't discovered any paperwork proof but as one of the sources is an an ex Bowes driver of some standing and the other is ex BR and the owner of an ex Bowes engine I think it's fair to say we think it's accurate!

Thanks are due to NELPG for letting this happen of course. She looks great and we can't wait to see her on a coal train and paired up with our ex North Eastern Railway carriages.

Don't miss it, this one's going to be a cracker!

Oh and we've still got another visitor to announce in the coming days too!

Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't the "main line" of the preserved Tanfield railway originally BR, and the industrial bit crossed it at right angles at Andrews House/Marley Hill? So 69023 is perfectly correct then! ;-)

I wish I could make this year, but sadly I'm busy on the Saturday, 55022 to Newcastle funnily enough! A second trip up there on Sunday is a bit too much. Oh well.

Sir Cecil A. Cochrane will indeed be returning from her current spell at Beamish in time to take part.

The history of the Tanfield Railway is a complex one. The Sunniside to East Tanfield section was at one time in the hands of the North Eastern Railway so yes a North Eastern designed locomotive is certainly appropriate. Equally I have seen reference to an agreement between John Bowes and Partners (constructors of the 'industrial' Marley Hill engine shed) to house NER locomotives and the NCB had running rights between Bowes Bridge and East Tanfield. On that latter point thers an interesting picture in the IRS book on the NCB in Durham featuring a BOWES waggon behind a former Lambton Hetton & Joicey locomotive which must have been worked over NER/LNER/BR metals at East Tanfield... kind of reinforces just how much the modern mainline vs industrial boundaries didn't always exist in days gone by!

It's all down hill on the way back to London... therefore the Northbound bit must be the most intersting bit, ergo just get off at Newcastle and stay at Tanfield Saturday and Sunday. Problem solved!

Oh P&JR forgot to add, Tanfield main running line has always been owned by the local land lord, so in theory it’s always been a private railway.

photos will follow very soon of the J72 at Tanfield.

I was wandering, is this the first engine the Tanfield have hosted during its preservation period with a BR logo on the side? Admittedly Joem carries the NER crest as well, and the Y7(? or was 1310 a Y10, which visited several years ago) also carried NER colours.
