Oh dear Tony..... Ring Haw is a fantastic loco. Sounds great, looks good and is ideal for the North Norfolk. As a child I spent many a happy day travelling on Ring Haw and certainly one of the main reasons I am interested in steam now. I still have some of the tape recordings somewhere.

It could be argued there are plenty of Hunslet tanks (thank goodness!) but Wissington is something very special. Built in 1938 for the BSC it worked on the iconic Wissington Light Railway which inspired enthusiasts such as Peters, Allen and Riley. Add the fact that it was probably the last steam engines to work in Norfolk makes it pretty significant! I look forward to visiting the North Norfolk and travelling on the proposed light railway train. Certainly far more inspiring than yet another GW tank on a rake of mk1s.

Guess I'm not an enthusiast then... Fantastic loco, have made the journey over to NNR for it many a time and intend to do so many times in the future! 9F? Very good locos, but where's the fun in a class 9 load 5ish? Ring Haw, well worth a trip!

Ring Haw on the dining set (5 at gala one of which is the RBR which is apparently equivelent to 1.5 normal mk1s and the first class which has heavier suspension apparently) does sound good

Re: North Norfolm Steam Gala September

Is Ring Haw classed as an "ordinary" loco then when it comes to engines taking their turn on running days?

I ask because as a regular summer visitor to the NNR for the past 5 or so years, I have yet to see it operate any trains during my visits. I awaited its return with much interest (same applies for the Y7) but presumed it was kept away from summer holiday traffic in favour of the BR engines. I usually visit for 2 weeks during the August "Red Timetable" season. Will it be out this year?

The loco certainly proved very popular (& capable) when it visited my home line in February 2009. I can still remember the raised eyebrows when it was discovered the loco was only diagrammed one trip on its own during one of the gala days!

It is generally not put out on the red service trains but has been put out when needed and is more than capable of hauling the trains. With the N7's axlebox failure, I would think there is a higher chance of it being put out as august is solid red service and washouts have to be fitted in somewhere.

Re: North Norfolm Steam Gala September

Is this a problem that will put the loco out of action for August?

I presume the summer fleet will therefore be 44767, 5619, 65462 & Ring Haw.

Re: North Norfolm Steam Gala September

One of the axleboxes has snapped clean in half along a weld. I don't know anything official but i think it is off to the south devon to use the wheel drop with a view to being back at the end of august.

And yeah, that should be the summer fleet along with the 9F whenever that is due to arrive. (Don't know if it is coming a bit earlier of just for the gala). 4 is a bit tight to run a red service. I think 5 is the preferred number of locos. We cannot break anything!

    Ring Haw rocks

I may be wrong but she has been a mainstay of the railway since the early 80s/late 70s (apart from a period of 5 years or so in the 00s)

Does anyone know if No.30777 Sir Lamiel is confirmed? Seems a visit is in the planning and leaving from Sheringham via the crossing to Barrow Hill. (According to Steam Railway Magazine) Would be a great addition for the gala if it happens.

    So far the line-up is;

    65462
    5619
    92212
    44767

    with provisonally:

    45305 (dependent on overhaul)
    30777
69621 (the NNR maybe looking for a replacement to this)

    Rolling stock should be:

    Blood/ Custard dining Set
    Both Maroon Mk1 sets
    Quad Arts
and some of the other items of rolling stock from around the railway.

The NNR have got a couple of area's that we are looking at for visiting locos.

Surprise mystery guest loco just annouced on NNR web site. I love surprises! Any guesses? I suppose if anyone knows which loco it is, it will spoil my surprise and also would cease to be a mystery! Already good line up. Can't wait.

Well, obviously myself & most other NNR volunteers know wat the loco is, but we have all been sworn to secrecy on what it is.

Well being a long time NNR volunteer, this does seem stupid, the more advertising the more visitors will come to see it,

of course the Y7 if ready, was the mystery, it would **** alot of people off, with a wasted trip..................................

You're telling me that you're not going to release information about what's visiting until the actual gala? I'd love to know how that fits into an advertising campaign? 'Come along and only then will you find out what you can ride behind...'

I'm not doing a 600 mile round trip to find out it's something I don't want to see... There's plenty happening up here that weekend if that's whats going to happen. Why such a secret may I ask? Simon

it's a bit difficult to hide a steam locomotive. no doubt therefore it will be announced nearer the date.

From a pure marketing point of view this descision to advertise a mystery guest loco does seem rather strange, but I guess the NNR have their reasons. It is not the first time a railway has done this and it probably won't be the last.
Does it benefit a railway to have this approach?
If the loco is that much of an attraction I would have thought the maximum publicity would be an advantage.
Lets just watch this space and enjoy!
