What a credit to all involved. We must wait to see if the valve gear can be tamed though!

Rather than have to become a member of another forum and as Andrew has not taken the effort to summarise the contents I presume the event detailed here is what is being referred to: http://www.whrsoc.org.uk/WHRProject/lyd.htm I ahve to sat I am confused as to why it is plain black considerinf the tanks had earlier been painted green and fully lined out by the looks of it. It seems rather a retrograde step. i also think it does nothing for the look of the machine

The black is just for running-in, like the gray Tornado and 'hard-to-clean' white Garratt 87. I'm assuming black was chosen as it is easier to clean!

As someone who has built 6 models of MWs, they are black locos with green panels. It seems quite normal to leave the loco black until all running problems are ironed out.

The gloss black livery follows an established FR tradition for new or recently overhauled locos to undertake running-in trials in a plain livery - to avoid damage to the final livery if further work is required to get everything settled in correctly...

Recent common practice at Boston Lodge has been to run-in new locos and conduct steam trials with the locos in an all-black paint scheme - various adjustments and maintenance will be needed during this period, which may involve removing the tanks etc, and the consequent risk of damage to paintwork. An authentically painted and lined livery will cost several thousand pounds to complete, so initially at least, LYD will be running in unlined black. Once fettling of the the loco is complete, it is expected that Lyd will return to the paint shop for a repaint, to eventually appear resplendent in Southern Green with the correct lining and lettering (the original "SOUTHERN" letters on the tanks that you may have seen before were actually vinyl!) Besides, the owners can paint it any colour they want to!
