Mike30A: Thanks for sharing those videos. They show up so well the "vastness" of the S & C, and of course an engine so suited to that line.

Many thanks. Only thing missing was a little bit of sunshine, but at least there was a break in the rain. Probably been said before, but the S&C must rank in the top 3 lines in the country -- now that could start a debate !

The location is Nappa; its off the Gisburn - Longpreston road at the 2nd road underbridge where you near the line on the left hand side with farm buildings then drop down sharply to drive under the railway. The road curves round one side of an opal shape and the railway the other side. The road climbs to a small rise at the top of which is a right hand turn; take this and the bridge is 1-200 yards up the hill. If coming from Hellifield you drive down a long straight with a sharp reverse bend at the end; just after this is a short climb and the road is on the left hand side at the top of the rise. Its a nice shot but parking can be a problem if too many people are there.

Much appreciated and no more than 5 minutes from my house along a road I travel every day so I know just where you mean, I may give it a whirl next week if the weather is favourable.

Yesterday at Aisgill summit as i was waiting for the returning Fellsman with 5690 when a chap with a camera dressed in black with a baseball cap decided it was ok to go lineside . He even crossed the tracks onto the up line just before a unit travelling on the down line blasted its horn at him but he still stayed on the track and as i shouted over the wall telling him that he was taking a big risk he just looked at me and said nothing. I thought he had gone back to his car but out he popped from behind lineside equipment with his camera as 5690 rounded the curve . What people will do just to get a picture is totally beyond me . He might think he got away with it but his picture will be shortly in the hands of Steam railway magazine who i hope can name and shame this idiot. I know this may not be part of this thread but this guy annoyed me that much that i thought it would be ok.

    Question for you

11th August Fellsman, whats the motive power likely to be

44932 is in the south east
    5690 on the SSE's
    48151 off to Blaneau
    45407 at Fort Bill
    45231 also at Fort Bill
    5972 now at York

46115 may still be minus driving wheels at York

    so I'm guessing if repaired it's 46115 , if not it's ???

46115's LH middle driving axlebox was just going back on the axle this afternoon in the NRM workshop.
    The RH was already on.

Had an excellent day out on the Fellsman today; great loco, friendly train staff and excellent value for money. Late leaving Hellifield this morning (not sure why), and a fairly standard climb to Blea Moor with the slowest part being around Selside. Reduced stop at Appleby and no water taken. Into Carlisle about 10 down. The return was superb - following a 15 minute late start, driver Gordon Hodgson had the lateness down to just 5 minutes at Appleby, before a superb climb to Ais Gill (with a couple of TSRs) brought us into Garsdale early and we were held (nice to stop at Garsdale anyway for old times' sake). The light for the whole day was very dull sadly, except for when we reached Dentdale when we met some stunning lighting until Horton. Left Hellifield early following watering and proceeded 20 minutes ahead of schedule down the Blackburn-Hellifield. Stopped at Whalley before another display of great skill on the footplate had us chattering up Wilpshire nicely. Then held at Daisyfield for a unit and left Blackburn roughly on-time behind a pacer. We left the train at Preston where it left about 3 late; oddly in front of a Pendolino.

The Fellsman is booked into Barton & Broughton loop for a few minutes to let the Pendolino pass.
